Former Winnsboro ISD Teacher Arrested for Relationship with Student

Authorities in Wood County have announced the arrest of a former teacher and assistant football coach from Winnsboro ISD on allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student, according to KLTV.

Nicholas Gabriele, who served as an economics teacher and assistant football coach at Winnsboro High School, located at 634 S Post Oak St, Winnsboro, TX 75494, during the 2024-25 academic year, reportedly began a relationship with a student during his time at the school. Investigators received evidence, as well as concerns from members of the community, indicating that Gabriele had engaged in sexual activity with the student.

An arrest warrant was subsequently issued, and Gabriele was located in Ennis. Law enforcement officials confirmed that he was taken into custody without incident. During the investigation, Gabriele admitted to the relationship. He has been charged with a second-degree felony for improper relationship between an educator and a student and is currently being held at the Ellis County Jail.

Winnsboro ISD addressed the situation in a public statement, noting that Gabriele had resigned from the district prior to these allegations surfacing. The district emphasized that he is no longer affiliated with Winnsboro ISD in any capacity. Officials assured the community that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues, reaffirming their commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of their students.

As the case unfolds, law enforcement agencies are continuing their efforts to gather additional information. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.

Legal Options for Students Sexually Abused by High School Teachers and Coaches

Victims of sexual abuse by educators often face overwhelming questions about their rights and the steps they can take to seek accountability. In this interview, Texas attorney Anjali Nigam explains the legal avenues available to students and families, outlining how survivors can report abuse, pursue civil action, and access vital support resources. Her guidance provides a clear path forward for those navigating the aftermath of abuse by a trusted authority figure.

Darla Medina, Editor: What legal steps can a student or their family take if they've experienced sexual abuse by a teacher in Texas?

Anjali Nigam, Attorney: Survivors and their families have several options. They can file a police report, which may lead to criminal charges against the perpetrator. Additionally, they may pursue a civil lawsuit against both the individual and, in some cases, the school district if there was negligence in hiring or supervision. Texas law provides for both compensatory and, in certain cases, punitive damages. It's important for survivors to consult an attorney experienced in these cases to understand their rights and the best course of action.

Medina: Is there a time limit for taking legal action?

Nigam: Yes, Texas has statutes of limitations for both criminal and civil cases. However, the timeline can vary depending on the age of the survivor and the specifics of the case. Recent changes in the law have extended the time survivors have to come forward. Prompt legal advice is key to preserving all available options.

Medina: What support resources are available for students and families dealing with this kind of trauma?

Nigam: There are several support options. Many communities in Texas have crisis centers that offer counseling and advocacy services specifically for survivors of sexual abuse. School districts often provide access to counselors, and there are statewide hotlines and organizations that can connect families with specialized therapists. Legal counsel can also help families connect with these resources and guide them through the process of seeking both justice and healing.

Medina: Can families expect confidentiality if they come forward?

Nigam: Yes, confidentiality is a priority throughout both the criminal and civil processes. Law enforcement, schools, and attorneys are required to protect the identities of minors and survivors. It’s understandable to be concerned about privacy, but there are strong protections in place to help families feel safe when reporting abuse and seeking help.
