Former FL Music Teacher Arrested for Child Sexual Abuse

A former music teacher at a Hillsborough Christian school has been arrested on charges of child sexual abuse involving a student, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Denzel Proctor, 26, was arrested on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, on five counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and one count of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Proctor was a music teacher at Grace Christian School located at 1300 N Valrico Rd, Valrico, FL 33594.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Proctor began an "inappropriate relationship" with a 16-year-old student in 2022. On July 3, detectives were notified of a sexual battery by an authority figure involving a pregnant 18-year-old woman. The woman told detectives that she "engaged in a sexual relationship with Proctor both on and off campus between 2022 and 2024, which resulted in her becoming pregnant."

After Proctor resigned in December 2023, the school reported rumors of the relationship to the Department of Children and Families.

"This man preyed upon a vulnerable teenager, violating the trust of our community," said Sheriff Chad Chronister in a news release. "Such betrayal is especially devastating when it comes from someone expected to serve as a mentor."

Records show Proctor is being held at the Falkenburg Road Jail without bond. Prosecutors have filed a motion seeking to have him held without bond while his case is pending. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for Monday morning.

The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information can call 813-247-8200.

Seeking Accountability for Victims of Christian School Sexual Abuse

In the wake of the disturbing allegations against a former teacher at Grace Christian School in Valrico, Florida, we sat down with experienced Florida sexual abuse lawyer Mike Haggard to discuss the legal avenues available to victims of Christian school sex abuse. Haggard, who has a history of representing survivors of abuse, provided valuable insights on how the victims can hold both the perpetrator and the negligent school accountable for the harm done.

Editor Darla Medina (DM): Mr. Haggard, what are some of the legal options available to the victims in cases like this involving sexual abuse at a Christian school?

Attorney Mike Haggard (MH): Victims of such horrific instances have a few important legal avenues they can pursue. First and foremost, they can seek criminal charges against the perpetrator for the egregious sexual abuse they endured. The prosecutors should pursue the maximum penalties allowable under the law.

Additionally, the victims can file civil lawsuits against their abuser as well as the school for their negligence in allowing this abuse to occur. Schools have a duty to protect their students, and if they fail to properly vet, train, or supervise this teacher, they can be held liable.

DM: What kinds of damages could the victims seek in a civil lawsuit?

MH: The victims could seek compensation for a wide range of damages, including past and future medical expenses related to the abuse, psychological counseling, pain and suffering, and punitive damages to punish the perpetrator and school for their actions. The goal would be to help the victims obtain the resources they need to heal and move forward with their lives.

DM: Are there any other parties that could potentially be held accountable?

MH: Absolutely. Depending on the specifics, the Department of Children and Families could also face liability if they failed to properly investigate the initial reports of the relationship. Any individuals, whether at the school or within the department, who had knowledge of the abuse but failed to act, could also be named in a civil lawsuit.

The key is to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover all the parties that may bear responsibility for allowing these horrific acts to occur and continue unchecked. Justice demands that all negligent parties be held fully accountable. School sexual abuse cases are very complex, so seeking legal guidance is crucial for victims to understand their rights fully.

DM: Thank you, Mr. Haggard, for providing this important legal perspective on the options available to victims of school sexual abuse.

MH: You're welcome. I hope this information helps the victims seek the justice and compensation they deserve.
