A Uvalde High School coach has been arrested following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student, according to KSAT. The incident came to light on Friday when officers from the Uvalde Police Department (UPD) responded to a mental health crisis call and uncovered information pointing to potential misconduct involving a Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) employee.
The individual, identified as 31-year-old Alberto Joseph Martinez, was taken into custody after a thorough investigation by multiple agencies, including the Uvalde Police Department, UCISD Police and Administration, the 38th Criminal District Attorney’s Office, the Texas Rangers, Child Protective Services, and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities conducted interviews with witnesses and collected evidence before executing an arrest warrant for Martinez, with the assistance of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
In response to the incident, Uvalde CISD Superintendent Ashley Chohlis addressed the school community, expressing regret over the situation and emphasizing the district's commitment to supporting students and staff. Chohlis noted the availability of counseling resources and stressed the importance of patience during the ongoing investigation.
“We are committed to transparency,” Chohlis stated, while acknowledging that limited details could be shared due to the active nature of the case. She reassured the community that appropriate actions were being taken to address the matter and maintain the integrity of the district’s educational mission.
The arrest has sparked concern among parents and students in the district, with many turning to the district's counseling staff and community resources for support. The incident is seen as a significant challenge for a community already familiar with adversity, as officials work to ensure accountability and maintain trust.
When allegations of misconduct arise involving a trusted figure like a coach, the emotional and legal challenges for victims can be overwhelming. To better understand the steps families can take and the protections available under the law, we spoke with experienced Texas attorney Anjali Nigam. She provides valuable guidance on how victims and their families can address such situations, seek accountability, and access the support they need following sexual assault by a coach.
Darla Medina (Editor): Ms. Nigam, thank you for joining us. When situations like this arise, what legal avenues are available for students or families who may have been victimized by a coach?
Anjali Nigam (Attorney): Thank you for having me. In cases involving misconduct by a coach or any school employee, victims and their families can explore both criminal and civil legal options. On the criminal side, law enforcement typically handles the investigation, and if charges are filed, the accused will face prosecution.
Medina: What about civil cases? How can families seek justice or support through that route?
Nigam: Civil cases allow victims to seek compensation for the harm they’ve endured, whether it’s emotional trauma, therapy expenses, or future counseling needs. Families can also file suits against the school district if there’s evidence that the administration failed to act responsibly in preventing or addressing the misconduct.
Medina: Do these cases often rely on evidence like witness testimonies?
Nigam: Absolutely. Testimonies, digital records, and other forms of evidence play a key role in both criminal and civil cases. Families should also document their experiences and reach out to a qualified attorney as soon as possible to understand their rights.
Medina: Thank you for sharing this with us. Any final thoughts for the community?
Nigam: It’s important for anyone affected to know they are not alone. There are legal protections in place, and support systems exist to help them through this challenging time.
