A former teacher has been taken into custody following allegations of attempting to engage in sexual activities with a minor, according to WFLA.
Stephen Fabic, 40, has had his employment terminated after the arrest. Fabic began his role as a math instructor in September at Hillsborough High School, located at 5000 N Central Ave, Tampa, FL 33603. The incident has sparked concern within the community regarding safety and trust in educational environments.
According to law enforcement, Fabic initiated conversations with an undercover detective who was posing as a 15-year-old boy on a dating application known as “Duet.” The communication started on January 25, leading to exchanged numbers and a series of text messages.
The arrest report highlighted troubling messages that Fabic allegedly sent, discussing topics such as sex and physical intimacy. One particularly unsettling text read, “Not like I’m going to come up to you and your mom and like hey … I’m talking to your kid and want to do things to him??”
On Monday, Fabic attempted to meet the teenage decoy for sexual purposes, leading to his arrest by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. He now faces several charges, including attempted lewd or lascivious battery and traveling to meet a minor for illicit activities.
As authorities continue to investigate, the community awaits further details regarding the case and any potential implications for the school district. A mugshot of Fabic has not been released as of this report.

Due to the increase in alarming allegations of online sexual crimes by teachers, families often grapple with the next steps to ensure justice and protection for their loved ones. To provide clarity on legal options available for victims of sexual abuse by educators, we spoke with Michael Haggard, a seasoned lawyer specializing in such cases. He shares valuable information on the rights of victims, the importance of coming forward, and the possible legal routes families can take to seek accountability.
Editor Darla Medina: With the rising number of cases like this, what are the increased risks for students when a teacher is arrested for online solicitation?
Attorney Michael Haggard: When a teacher is involved in such allegations, it creates an environment of fear and uncertainty for students. Others may have faced similar situations but remain silent, making it imperative for schools to address these concerns transparently. Students need to feel safe and supported.
Medina: What steps can families take if they suspect their child has been affected?
Haggard: Families should encourage open communication with their children and report any concerns to school authorities. It’s also beneficial to consult legal counsel to understand the available options, whether it’s filing a report or pursuing civil action.
Medina: How can legal action impact the overall safety of schools?
Haggard: Holding offenders accountable sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated. It encourages other victims to come forward and can compel schools to implement better safety protocols, thereby protecting students.
Medina: What final advice do you have for families navigating this situation?
