CA Basketball Coach Arrested for Alleged Sexual Abuse

A Simi Valley Unified School District basketball coach has been taken into custody following serious allegations of sexual abuse involving two young girls. Jabari DeShields, 36, who served as an assistant walk-on basketball coach at Simi Valley High School, located at 5400 Cochran St, Simi Valley, CA 93063, was arrested Thursday after a report was filed by a mandated reporter, according to KTLA.

Details of the Allegations of Sexual Misconduct

The allegations against DeShields involve two juvenile girls, both of whom he reportedly met outside of school hours at a local business. While only one of the victims is currently a student in the district, both attended different schools and are not enrolled at Simi Valley High School. Police have stated that they do not suspect there are additional victims at this time.

District Response to Teacher Sexual Misconduct

School officials have refrained from commenting on the matter due to the ongoing investigation, but confirmed that DeShields has been placed on leave while the inquiry is conducted. According to a district spokesperson, DeShields’s role as a walk-on coach did not include classroom instruction.

Legal Proceedings

DeShields faces five felony counts of lewd acts upon a minor aged 14. He is currently being held at the Ventura County Main Jail with a bail set at $120,000. Law enforcement encourages anyone with further information related to the case to reach out to Detective Kellyn King at 805-583-6913.

Understanding Legal Options for Victims of Coach Abuse

In the wake of the alarming arrest of a Simi Valley basketball coach for alleged sexual abuse, families of victims may feel overwhelmed and uncertain about their next steps. To clarify the legal pathways available, we spoke with Jason Amala, an experienced California sexual abuse lawyer. He provides valuable information on what families can do to seek justice and support for their children if sexually abused by a high school coach.

Editor Darla Medina: With the recent arrest of coach Jabari DeShields, what legal avenues are available for the families of the victims?

Attorney Jason Amala: Families have several options. They can pursue criminal charges against the perpetrator, which is what’s happening in this case. Additionally, they may consider filing a civil lawsuit for damages. This can provide compensation for emotional distress and other impacts on the victims’ lives.

Medina: What steps should families take if they wish to pursue a civil case?

Amala: The first step is to gather evidence. This includes any documentation of the abuse, witness statements, and any communication related to it. Consulting with an attorney who specializes in these cases is crucial to navigate the process effectively.

Medina: Are there specific time limits for filing these civil suits?

Amala: Yes, California has a statute of limitations that varies depending on the nature of the abuse and the age of the victim. It's important for families to act quickly to ensure they can file within the allowable timeframe.

Medina: What should families know about the emotional aspect of pursuing legal action?

Amala: It can be a challenging journey. Families should prioritize their emotional well-being and consider seeking support from counselors or support groups. Legal proceedings can be lengthy and emotionally taxing, so having a strong support system is vital.
