A substitute teacher at Lennard High School located at 2342 E Shell Point Rd, Ruskin, FL 33570, has been arrested following allegations of a sexual relationship with a student, according to Tampa Bay Times. Joseph Prevatte, 39, was taken into custody on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported he engaged in inappropriate interactions.
Prevatte served as a substitute at the school from October 1 to October 3 in at the Hillsborough County high school. Detectives found evidence of inappropriate messages exchanged with a student, leading to charges of lewd or lascivious battery and harmful explicit communication to a minor. He is currently being held at the Orient Road Jail without bond.
Authorities have also linked Prevatte to an investigation in Manatee County, where he was substituting at another high school. A tip received via the FortifyFL app on October 31 prompted detectives to examine his communications with a student, which included explicit messages sent through Instagram. Prevatte had reportedly shared an image of himself that was partially unclothed.
Following the investigation, Prevatte was booked in the Manatee County jail on November 12 for soliciting or engaging in lewd conduct with a student. He was released the following day after posting a $75,000 bond.
Tanya Arja, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County school district, expressed the district's dismay at Prevatte's actions. She confirmed that he was removed from the school as soon as officials learned of the allegations, commending the swift response of law enforcement to ensure student safety.
Authorities urge anyone who may have been a victim of Prevatte to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at 813-247-8200.
In the aftermath of troubling incidents involving sexual abuse in schools, many parents find themselves uncertain about their legal options. To provide clarity, we spoke with Michael Haggard, a seasoned Florida attorney specializing in cases of sexual abuse. He shares vital information on the rights available to victims and their families, outlining steps to hold responsible parties accountable and secure the necessary support for healing and recovery.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us, Michael. Given the recent case involving Joseph Prevatte, what legal options do parents have if their child is a victim of sexual abuse by a substitute teacher or school employee?
Attorney Michael Haggard: Parents have several important legal avenues. First, they can pursue civil action against the teacher for damages. This includes emotional distress, medical expenses, and any other related costs.
Medina: What about accountability for the school district?
Haggard: Absolutely. If the school failed to properly vet the teacher or ignored warning signs, parents can file a lawsuit against the district for negligence. Schools have a duty to protect their students, and if they breach that duty, they can be held liable.
Medina: How can parents gather evidence to support their case?
Haggard: Documentation is key. Parents should keep records of any communications, reports from their child, and any interactions with school officials. Additionally, gathering witness statements can be very helpful.
Medina: What resources are available for parents navigating this process?
Haggard: There are various organizations that offer support, such as advocacy groups for victims of sexual abuse. Consulting with an experienced attorney is also critical, as they can guide parents through the legal process and ensure their rights are protected.
Medina: What immediate steps should parents take if they suspect their child has been abused?
Haggard: Reporting the abuse to law enforcement should be the top priority. Following that, seeking medical attention and emotional support for the child is vital. Lastly, consulting with a legal professional can help parents understand their options moving forward.
Medina: Thank you for your insights, Michael. This information will be invaluable for families facing such difficult circumstances.
