Legal Paths for Families of Abuse Victims: Attorney Jesse Forbes Weighs In

When a trusted figure violates the safety of children, the emotional and legal aftermath can leave families searching for answers. Following the conviction of former Ravenswood assistant track coach Thomas Haines, parents are left grappling with how to protect their children and hold those responsible accountable. To address these concerns, attorney Jesse Forbes, a seasoned advocate for survivors of child exploitation at a middle school, discusses the legal steps families can take to seek accountability and begin the process of healing.

Editor Darla Medina: Many in the Ravenswood community are reeling from this case. What legal steps can families of children affected by such incidents take?

Attorney Jesse Forbes: Families in situations like this have both criminal justice avenues and civil remedies available. On the criminal side, the guilty verdict against Thomas Haines brings accountability under the law. However, civil action is also an option, allowing families to seek compensation for the emotional and psychological harm caused.

Medina: What might civil action involve in a case like this?

Forbes: Civil cases often focus on holding individuals and institutions accountable for negligence. In this case, the school could be investigated for potential lapses in supervision or safety protocols. If the institution failed to provide a safe environment or overlooked signs of inappropriate behavior, they could be liable.

Medina: What kind of support can families expect if they choose to file suit?

Forbes: A lawsuit not only provides a chance for financial relief but also creates an opportunity to push for systemic changes. Families often find that these actions bring vital awareness to the need for stricter policies, better training for staff, and enhanced protections for students.

Medina: How important is it for families to act quickly?

Forbes: Acting promptly is critical because statutes of limitations can vary. Consulting an attorney early ensures that families understand their options and don’t miss deadlines. It also allows for a more thorough investigation while evidence and memories are fresh.
