Former MD High School Teacher Arrested For Sexual Abuse

The Baltimore Banner reported that a former high school teacher has been apprehended and charged with second-degree rape and sexual abuse of a minor, according to local authorities. The accused, Karl Houston Walls, 27, had taught at Northeast High School located at 1121 Duvall Hwy, Pasadena, MD 21122 for a period of four years before these disturbing allegations surfaced.

According to the police, two students have come forward, accusing Walls of engaging in explicit communication with them, including sending sexually explicit text messages, photos, and videos. Furthermore, the students alleged that he solicited child pornography and had sexual contact with them. A particularly chilling detail emerged, with claims that Walls held a knife against one of the victims, asking if he should "use it."

Walls faces multiple charges, including three counts of second-degree assault, second-degree rape, sexual abuse of a minor, perverted practice, and a weapons charge, among others. As of now, no attorney is listed for Walls in online court records.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokesperson Bob Mosier provided details about Walls' employment history. He revealed that Walls joined Northeast High School as a teaching assistant in 2019 and remained in that role for three years. Following that, Walls worked for a year as a special education co-teacher for science classes.

After the students made their allegations known in May, immediate action was taken by the school district. Walls was promptly removed from the school setting and placed in a position where there was no contact with children, although the specific nature of this position was not disclosed. Mosier emphasized the school district's commitment to ensuring the safety of its students, stating, "People who would prey on children have no place anywhere near a school, much less in the classroom."

Northeast High School Principal Jason Williams addressed the issue in a letter sent to families and staff, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families. Williams highlighted the school's cooperation with the Police Department since the initial allegation came to light and urged anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in the investigation.

Justice For Victims of Sexual Abuse By a High School Teacher

In the wake of the alarming allegations surrounding the arrest of Karl Houston Walls, a former Anne Arundel County high school teacher accused of rape and sexual abuse of a minor, the focus now turns to the broader issue of holding accountable those who enable abuse within the educational system. To shed light on this matter, we reached out to local Maryland-based sexual abuse lawyer, Aaron Blank, Esq., to learn more about how victims sexually abused by a teacher can seek justice.

Darla Medina (DM): Thank you for joining us today, Attorney Blank. Given your expertise in sexual abuse cases, what options do survivors of abuse have when considering a civil case against those who enable abuse in high schools?

Aaron Blank (AB): Thank you for having me, Darla. Survivors of abuse have the option to pursue civil cases against individuals or institutions that enabled or failed to prevent the abuse. These cases focus on seeking compensation for the harm they have suffered, holding the responsible parties accountable, and raising awareness about the issue.

DM: Could you elaborate on the importance of gathering evidence in these cases?

AB: Absolutely, Darla. Evidence plays a critical role in establishing the facts and building a strong case. Survivors should gather any available documentation, such as emails, text messages, or other forms of communication that could support their claims. Additionally, eyewitness accounts and testimonies from individuals who have knowledge of the abuse or the enabling behavior can be valuable evidence.

DM: Many survivors may be concerned about the statute of limitations. What can you tell us about that?

AB: The statute of limitations varies by jurisdiction and the specific circumstances of the case. In Maryland, the law has been evolving to provide more options for survivors by extending or removing certain limitations. It's important for survivors to consult with an experienced attorney to understand how the statute of limitations may apply to their particular situation.

DM: How does legal representation assist survivors in navigating these complex cases?

AB: Having legal representation is crucial for survivors pursuing civil cases. An attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases can provide guidance, support, and expertise throughout the entire process. They can help survivors understand their rights, navigate legal procedures, gather evidence, and negotiate with the opposing party. Additionally, an attorney can advocate for survivors' best interests and help them seek the compensation they deserve.

DM: Does pursuing a civil case impact the healing process for survivors?

AB: Each survivor's healing journey is unique, and the decision to pursue a civil case is a personal one. For some survivors, seeking justice and holding enablers accountable can be an important part of their healing process. It empowers them and helps prevent similar abuses from happening to others. However, it's essential that survivors have a strong support system in place, including therapy and emotional support, as legal proceedings can be challenging.

DM: Thank you, Attorney Blank, for sharing your insights on this important topic. Is there any additional information or advice you would like to provide to survivors and their families?

AB: I would encourage survivors and their families to reach out to experienced professionals who can guide them through this difficult journey. Seek support from organizations that specialize in supporting survivors of abuse. Remember that you are not alone, and there are resources available to assist you every step of the way.
