Georgia HS Track Coach Arrested for Child Sexual Abuse

A high school teacher and track and field coach has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting at least one student under his supervision, according to a report by 11 Alive. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has revealed that 47-year-old Kerry Hood, who was employed at Lithia Springs High School located at 2520 E County Line Rd, Lithia Springs, GA 30122, turned himself in on Wednesday following a report of the alleged assault.

According to the sheriff's office, a person came forward two days earlier, claiming they were assaulted by Hood while they were a student at the high school. The incidents are said to have occurred on school grounds as well as in other states.

"Probable cause was established for the arrest of Kerry Hood for his actions regarding the sexual assault of a student," the sheriff's office stated. The authorities emphasized that this is a case where "a person in a supervisory capacity has taken advantage of a student under their charge."

The DeKalb County School District, where Hood was previously offered a head football coaching position at Arabia Mountain High School, has now indicated that it will not proceed with his employment. The district stressed that it "takes allegations of inappropriate or unlawful behavior very seriously and prioritizes students' safety and well-being above all else."

Investigators are currently continuing their examination of the case, and the public is urged to come forward with any relevant information that may aid in the investigation.

This shocking development has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of students entrusted to the care of educators. The authorities have vowed to pursue justice and ensure that any individual who abuses their position of trust is held accountable.

Understanding Legal Recourse for Victims of School-Based Sexual Abuse

In the wake of the disturbing allegations against a high school track coach for sexually assaulting a student under his supervision, we sat down with John Bey, an experienced Georgia school sexual abuse lawyer, to discuss the legal rights and options available to victims in such cases. Bey provided valuable insights on the civil claims that can be pursued, the types of compensation victims may be entitled to, and the importance of working with a qualified attorney to navigate the complex legal process.

Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us, Mr. Bey.

Attorney John Bey: Thank you for having me. This is a deeply troubling situation, and I'm glad we have the opportunity to discuss the legal recourse available to victims of school sex abuse and their families.

DM: Can you explain the types of legal claims that victims of school-based sexual abuse can pursue?

JB: Absolutely. Victims may be able to file civil lawsuits against the perpetrator, as well as the school district or other responsible parties, for negligence, breach of duty, and failure to protect the student. This could include claims of negligent hiring, supervision, or retention of the abusive teacher or coach.

DM: And what about the rights of the victims? What kind of compensation can they seek?

JB: Victims have the right to seek compensation for the harm they've suffered, including damages for physical and emotional trauma, therapy and counseling costs, and other related expenses. In some cases, punitive damages may also be available to punish the perpetrator and deter similar conduct in the future.

DM: That's important information. What advice would you give to victims or their families who are considering taking legal action?

JB: My advice would be to act quickly, as there are time limits for filing these types of claims. It's also crucial to work with an experienced attorney who specializes in school sexual abuse cases and can navigate the complex legal landscape. The most important thing is to prioritize the victim's well-being and ensure they have access to the support and resources they need.

DM: Thank you, Mr. Bey, for providing this invaluable information. It's clear that victims have important legal rights and options available to them, and I encourage anyone affected by this type of abuse to seek the guidance of a qualified attorney.

JB: You're welcome. I'm glad I could shed some light on the legal remedies available.
