Former Space Center Intermediate Teacher Facing Felony Sex Abuse Charges

A former teacher for Clear Creek ISD's Space Center Intermediate School has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two students, ages 13 and 14. 29-year-old Samantha McFerrin is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 and sexual assault of a child ages 14-17.

According to court records, the alleged sexual assaults happened while McFerrin was a math teacher at Space Center Intermediate. Administrators at the school were notified early in February regarding inappropriate communication between McFerrin and a male student. This led to an investigation which uncovered two possible victims.

The first victim was allegedly abused in August of 2018. Court records claim that McFerrin and the student exchanged nude photos and that she sexually abused him in her truck at least 15 times. He was 14 years old at the time.

McFerrin is accused of sexually abusing the second victim, a 13-year-old, in her classroom at Space Center Intermediate.

McFerrin resigned during an initial interview after working for the school since 2016. She is currently out on a posted bond of $70,000.

Lawsuits Against Teachers Committing Sexual Abuse

Attorney contributor Anjali Nigam represents sex abuse victims in civil lawsuits. We've asked Anjali for some insight into the legal rights of school sex abuse victims and their families:

Teachers, coaches, and other school employees are in positions of trust. While most of these employees are trustworthy, there have also been far too many cases of students being sexually abused by teachers. Our schools must take this crisis seriously and do everything they can to make sure their students are safe.

After a teacher has been accused of sexually abusing a student, both the accused teacher and the school should be investigated. Some of these tragedies are preventable and happen in part due to negligence - such as failing to investigate previous complaints of inappropriate behavior by a teacher towards a student. If negligence was involved, the victims and their families may have a case for a lawsuit against the school.
