AR High School Teacher Pleads Guilty to Harassment

Clayton Sallee, a 40-year-old former teacher at Farmington High School, located at 12327 AR-170, Farmington, AR 72730, pleaded guilty to harassment on July 10, avoiding a scheduled trial. As part of the plea deal, Sallee received a one-year probation sentence, was ordered to permanently surrender his teaching license, and is prohibited from any contact with the victim, according to News 5.

Prosecutor Brandon Carter underscored the importance of the plea agreement. “This case presented a number of challenges which were overcome to obtain a conviction against Mr. Sallee,” Carter said. “After consultation with the victim, it was particularly important that the defendant not be placed in a position to commit this sort of conduct again, which this plea accomplished through the surrender of his teaching license.”

Initial Arrest and District Response

Sallee was arrested in October 2024 on a second-degree sexual assault charge. Shortly after the arrest, the Farmington School District informed parents and guardians of the situation, stating that an employee had been accused of inappropriate conduct involving a student.

The district revealed that it became aware of the allegations in September 2024 and immediately reported the matter to the Arkansas Child Maltreatment Hotline in coordination with the Farmington Police Department. Sallee was placed on administrative leave at that time and never returned to the school.

Preventing Future Misconduct

Sallee is no longer listed as an employee on Farmington High School’s website. The plea agreement, which ensures the permanent surrender of his teaching license, is seen as a step to prevent him from returning to a position of authority over students.

The trial, originally set for July 14, was canceled following the plea. Prosecutors and school officials expressed relief that the outcome prioritizes the safety and well-being of students moving forward.

Legal Options for Victims of Teacher Sexual Misconduct

When cases of teacher sexual misconduct are uncovered, many victims and their families are left wondering what steps they can take to address the harm caused. To provide clarity on the legal paths available, attorney Joshua Gillespie, a seasoned Arkansas school sexual abuse lawyer, shares his knowledge on how victims can seek accountability and support through legal action.

Darla Medina (Editor): When cases like this surface, what legal options are available for victims of teacher misconduct?

Joshua Gillespie (Attorney): Victims have several paths they can take. Beyond the criminal charges pursued by prosecutors, victims can also file a civil lawsuit against the offender. This allows them to seek compensation for emotional distress, therapy costs, and other damages they’ve suffered as a result of the abuse.

Medina: Are there any avenues for holding schools accountable in these situations?

Gillespie: Absolutely. If a school or district failed to act appropriately or ignored warning signs, they could face liability. For example, if administrators were aware of misconduct but didn’t report it or take action, the victim could bring a claim against the district for negligence. Schools have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for students.

Medina: What challenges do victims face when pursuing these legal actions?

Gillespie: One significant challenge is the emotional toll. Reliving the trauma during investigations or in court can be incredibly difficult. Additionally, proving negligence or misconduct often requires thorough evidence, which may take time to gather. But with the right legal representation and support system, victims can stand a strong chance of obtaining justice.
