Former Virginia Teacher Arrested on 14 Child Sex Abuse Pornography Charges

According to 7News, William Riddell, a 40-year-old man from Chantilly, Virginia, was apprehended in Kansas in late Anjalih 2024, following an extensive investigation into child sex abuse materials (CSAM). Riddell, a former teacher in both Fairfax County and Loudoun County, now faces a total of 14 charges related to the possession and reproduction of child pornography. Riddell formerly taught music and served as a part-time substitute teacher in Loudoun County Public Schools between 2008 and 2013, was employed in 2012 as a paid Booster clinician at Chantilly High School, located at 4201 Stringfellow Rd, Chantilly, VA 20151.

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has confirmed that Riddell will be extradited to Virginia to face the charges. Investigators discovered electronic evidence linking Riddell to the CSAM, which allegedly implicates him in the distribution and creation of explicit materials involving minors.

In addition to the CSAM charges, Riddell is also being investigated for his involvement in an inappropriate relationship with a minor from Fairfax County. However, no charges have been filed thus far in connection with this specific incident. According to Fairfax County Public Schools, they did not officially employ him.

Once Riddell is in the custody of the FCPD, he will face multiple charges, including one count of possession of child pornography (first offense), one count of reproduction of child pornography (first offense), nine counts of possession of child pornography (second offense), and three counts of reproduction of child pornography (second offense).

Authorities suspect that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. The FCPD is urging anyone with information related to this case or any potential victims to contact them immediately at 703-246-7800, option 4. Exploring Legal Rights and Accountability For Survivors of School Sex Abuse

In a recent interview, sexual assault attorney Kevin Biniazan sat down with us to share his valuable perspective on the legal rights available to victims of sexual abuse at high schools and the importance of holding negligent schools accountable.  The experienced Virginia sex abuse lawyer provided insights into the steps victims can take to seek justice and navigate the complex process of seeking legal recourse.

Editor Darla Medina (DM): Welcome, Mr. Biniazan.

Attorney Kevin Biniazan (KB): Thank you, Darla. It's a pleasure to be here.

DM: Mr. Biniazan, considering the recent arrest of William Riddell, a former teacher facing child sex abuse material-related charges, what legal options do victims have when it comes to seeking justice for school-related sexual abuse?

KB: It's important to emphasize that victims of sexual abuse in high schools have legal rights they can exercise. They can pursue civil litigation against the perpetrators and, in some cases, even the school district itself. By taking legal action, victims can seek compensation for their physical and emotional damages and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

DM: How can victims prove the negligence of a school in sexual abuse cases?

KB: Proving negligence on the part of a school can be a complex process. However, there are several factors that can contribute to establishing a school's liability. These may include the failure to conduct proper background checks on employees, ignoring or mishandling reports of abuse, inadequate supervision, or a lack of policies and procedures to prevent such incidents. Gathering evidence, testimonies, and expert opinions can help build a strong case against a negligent school.

DM: What advice would you give to individuals who may have been sexually abused at a high school but are unsure about taking legal action?

KB: It's crucial for survivors to understand that they are not alone. Speaking with a trusted attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases can provide valuable guidance and support. They can help survivors navigate the legal process, protect their rights, and explore the available options. It's important to remember that taking legal action can not only bring justice but also contribute to preventing future incidents and holding institutions accountable for their actions or inactions.

DM: Thank you, Mr. Biniazan, for shedding light on this important topic and providing valuable insights into the legal rights of sexual abuse victims in high schools.

KB: Thank you, Darla. It was my pleasure to be here and raise awareness about this critical issue.
