A math teacher from Clarke Middle School, located at 1515 Bob Hope Dr, El Paso, TX 79936, has been arrested on multiple sexual abuse charges involving minors, as reported by El Paso County Jail Records and court documents obtained by KTSM.
Llojan Almaraz, 28, was initially taken into custody by the Socorro Independent School District (ISD) Police on September 13. He faces charges including an improper relationship with a student, child grooming, indecency with a child, and sexual performance of a child. He posted bond the following day.
Just a week later, on September 20, Almaraz was arrested again, this time charged with two counts of online solicitation of a minor. He was able to post bond the same day.
According to court documents, an officer received a report on August 28 about inappropriate interactions between Almaraz and a female student. The school's principal informed the officer of Almaraz's “improperly communicating” with the student. Almaraz had been teaching at Clarke since October 2021 and was the victim’s teacher during the current school year.
The victim's mother reported concerning text exchanges, stating that Almaraz had sent explicit images and made inappropriate comments about wanting to engage in sexual activity. A screen-recorded conversation was provided, revealing messages where Almaraz expressed a desire to date the victim and even mentioned wanting to get her pregnant.
Almaraz allegedly gifted the victim various items, including money for Starbucks and personal gifts like a lanyard and a gold necklace. The victim, who began communicating with Almaraz through a school sports app in October 2023, described multiple meetings with him, which included kissing and touching, though she stated they did not have sexual intercourse.
Further investigations revealed testimonies from other students who claimed Almaraz had similarly inappropriate interactions with them. One witness described feeling "groomed" during her interactions and noted that Almaraz had communicated with her through various social media platforms.
The Socorro ISD has placed Almaraz on administrative leave amid the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for the district stated, “This request is regarding an ongoing investigation. We are unable to release any information at this time.”
As the situation develops, the community remains on alert regarding the safety of students within the school environment.
In the aftermath of alarming allegations against a math teacher from Clarke Middle School, the conversation around the legal rights of victims and accountability for schools becomes increasingly important. We spoke with Anjali Nigam, an experienced sexual abuse attorney in Texas, to understand the options available for victims of teacher sexual misconduct and how families can address potential negligence within educational institutions.
Editor Darla Medina: Can you explain the legal rights available to children sexually abused by teachers?
Attorney Anjali Nigam: Absolutely, Darla. Victims and their families have the right to seek justice through criminal prosecution against the abuser. Additionally, they can file civil lawsuits against the individual and the school district if negligence can be proven.
DM: What constitutes negligence in these cases?
AN: Negligence occurs when a school fails to protect its students from foreseeable harm. This could mean not investigating reports of inappropriate behavior or failing to implement proper safeguarding measures.
DM: How can victims and their families hold schools accountable?
AN: They can gather evidence of the school's knowledge of the abuse and any previous complaints. Consulting with a legal professional specializing in sexual abuse cases is crucial for navigating these complex situations.
DM: Thank you, Anjali. Your insights are valuable for understanding the legal landscape surrounding these serious allegations.
