Authorities in Citrus Heights announced the arrest of Augustine Sanchez, a 48-year-old teacher at Mesa Verde High School located at 7501 Carriage Dr, Citrus Heights, CA 95621, on charges related to inappropriate behavior involving minors. Police confirmed that six victims have been identified in the case, according to a report by KCRA.
The Citrus Heights Police Department first received a report on March 6 detailing allegations of Sanchez’s behavior involving a minor. Following an extensive investigation, the case was handed over to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. On July 18, an arrest warrant was issued for Sanchez.
Sanchez surrendered to the Sacramento County Jail on Thursday. Officials clarified that they do not believe there are additional victims beyond the six already identified. However, anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department’s tip line at 916-727-5524.
The San Juan Unified School District confirmed that Sanchez had been employed at Mesa Verde High since 2012 and was placed on leave in February after concerns were raised. In a statement, the district emphasized its commitment to student safety:
“Before starting work, all employees undergo a comprehensive background check. Any reports of inappropriate behavior are immediately investigated, often with law enforcement involvement when necessary. We are currently reaching out to families to encourage discussions with students and to offer support for anyone feeling anxious or distressed due to this situation.”
This case has triggered broader conversations about safeguarding students and ensuring a safe educational environment. Local officials and community members are urging vigilance and cooperation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
When misconduct by educators occurs, families are often left grappling with confusion, anger, and uncertainty about the next steps. To provide clarity on the legal avenues available to those impacted, we spoke with Jason Amala, a California attorney specializing in school sexual abuse cases. In this interview, he explains how families can navigate the legal system, hold institutions accountable, and support affected children through this challenging process.
Darla Medina (Editor): With this case involving a teacher accused of misconduct with minors, what legal options are available to the families of these children?
Jason Amala (Attorney): Families in situations like this generally have two main courses of action. The first is cooperating with the criminal investigation, which can lead to consequences for the accused, such as jail time or restrictions on future employment involving minors.
The second is pursuing a civil case. This allows families to seek compensation for the emotional distress and other damages their children may suffer. A civil case can also hold schools or institutions accountable if there’s evidence they failed to act on warning signs or properly safeguard students.
Medina: What factors determine whether the school district could be held liable in a case like this?
Amala: Liability often depends on whether the district knew or should have known about the behavior. For instance, if previous complaints were ignored or if background checks were incomplete, that could point to negligence. In this case, the fact that the teacher was placed on leave months ago suggests there were concerns, which could be a factor.
Medina: What advice would you give to families navigating this difficult situation?
Amala: First, prioritize the well-being of the child by seeking counseling or support services. It’s also important to document everything—communications with the school, any behavioral changes in the child, and any direct evidence of misconduct. Consulting an attorney early on can help families understand their rights and the legal steps available to protect their children and hold responsible parties accountable.
