A former high school coach, once celebrated for his contributions to the sport of wrestling, is now facing serious accusations that have shaken the community. Ronald Wilson, 72, has been re-arrested on charges of sexually abusing multiple children during his decades-long teaching career, according to KTLA.
Wilson, who taught and coached at Camarillo High School, located at 4660 Mission Oaks Blvd, Camarillo, CA 93012, for nearly 30 years, initially came under investigation earlier this year. Authorities allege that he engaged in a sexual relationship with an underage girl while employed at the school. Following the investigation’s launch in March, Wilson was arrested in May after his photo was shared publicly in an effort to identify additional victims.
During his first court appearance on May 16, Wilson was released on $120,000 bail. However, on Thursday, he was taken into custody again after investigators reported uncovering new evidence and identifying more victims, including at least one child under the age of 14.
Wilson is now being held at the Ventura County Main Jail, where he awaits charges for forced rape and sexual assault of minors.
Before his tenure at Camarillo High, Wilson also taught for 13 years at Oxnard High School, located at 3400 W Gonzales Rd, Oxnard, CA 93036. Both schools are part of the Oxnard Union High School District, which announced in May that it was fully cooperating with law enforcement.
Wilson retired to Timnath, Colorado, following his career, but the allegations have cast a shadow over his legacy, including his Hall of Fame recognition.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward. Detective Rico Rinaldi of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office can be reached by email or at 805-384-4732. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact We-Tip at 1-800-782-7463 or submit tips online at wetip.com.
When allegations of sexual abuse surface against trusted figures, such as coaches, the impact on victims and their communities can be profound. For those affected, knowing how to move forward legally can feel overwhelming. Attorney Jason Amala, an experienced advocate for survivors sexually abused by a coach, shares valuable information about the legal avenues available to individuals abused by coaches, addressing both civil and criminal options and recent changes to California laws.
Darla Medina (Editor): Many families are unsure of what steps to take when abuse by a coach comes to light. What legal paths are available for victims in these situations?
Jason Amala (Attorney): Victims of abuse often have two main legal options. On one hand, they can pursue a civil case against the abuser or any institution that may have allowed the misconduct to occur. On the other hand, criminal charges can be brought by the state to hold the perpetrator accountable under the law.
Medina: How does the civil process differ from the criminal process in these cases?
Amala: In a civil case, the focus is on compensating the survivor for the harm they’ve endured—this includes psychological trauma, medical expenses, and loss of trust. These cases are initiated by the victim or their family and don’t require the same level of evidence as criminal cases. Criminal cases, however, are handled by prosecutors and aim to punish the abuser through fines, probation, or imprisonment. Both processes can happen independently or simultaneously.
Medina: California has made some changes to its laws regarding sexual abuse cases. How do these changes impact survivors?
Amala: California’s legislative reforms have been significant. For example, the state extended the statute of limitations for survivors to file civil lawsuits, giving individuals more time to come forward. There’s also no time limit for prosecuting certain types of child sexual abuse in criminal cases, which is important for those who need years, even decades, to speak about their experiences.
Medina: What would you say to someone who feels afraid or unsure about coming forward?
Amala: It’s completely normal to feel uncertain, but survivors should know they don’t have to take this journey alone. Reaching out to a trusted legal professional or support organization can help clarify the steps and provide the resources needed to move forward. Every decision is up to the survivor, and there’s no pressure to act immediately—it’s about finding the right time for them.
