An elementary school teacher and youth volleyball coach from Butler County is facing serious accusations of sexual misconduct involving a teenager, according to CBS News.
Pennsylvania State Police announced on Friday that Jared Lampus, 50, of Sarver, was taken into custody following an investigation into the allegations. Authorities allege that Lampus, who serves as a teacher at Buffalo Elementary School located at 562 Freeport Rd, Freeport, PA 16229 in the Freeport Area School District and as a coach with the Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Association, had sexual contact with a 16-year-old.
Charges against Lampus include rape, sexual assault, corruption of minors, and additional offenses. Police say the alleged incidents occurred across Butler, Armstrong, and Allegheny counties. Lampus is currently being held in the Butler County Jail as the investigation continues.
The Freeport Area School District has confirmed Lampus has been placed on leave while the investigation unfolds. In a statement, the district emphasized its commitment to student safety, noting that it is awaiting more information before taking further action.
The Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Association also addressed the situation, stating that it was informed of the investigation, which they say does not involve Lampus’ activities within the organization. The association revealed that Lampus resigned from his coaching position effective July 30 and has not been present at their facility since.
Residents of Butler County expressed shock and disbelief upon hearing the news. Lou Falsetti, a local resident, described the accusations as "disgusting," adding that he couldn’t find other words to express his reaction.
Jim Mayurik, another resident, called the situation "unbelievable" and "shocking," noting that it has left the community shaken. Polly Mayurik echoed those sentiments, urging parents to remain vigilant and maintain open communication with their children to ensure their safety.
State Police are encouraging anyone with knowledge of similar incidents involving Lampus to reach out to the Kittanning barracks at 724-543-2011. Investigators continue to work on gathering additional details related to the case.
When victims experience sexual abuse by trusted figures such as teachers or coaches, they and their families are often left grappling with unanswered questions and seeking effective ways to respond. To provide clarity on the legal paths available, attorney Guy D’Andrea, a Pennsylvania-based legal expert with extensive experience in handling sexual abuse cases, discusses how victims can take action. From reporting incidents to exploring civil lawsuits, D’Andrea highlights the steps families can take to seek accountability and support during these challenging times.
Editor Darla Medina: Given the seriousness of the allegations against the teacher and coach, Jared Lampus, what legal actions are available for victims and their families in cases like this?
Attorney Guy D’Andrea: Victims of sexual abuse by someone in a position of authority, such as a teacher or coach, have several legal options. Beyond the criminal charges, victims can pursue civil lawsuits to seek compensation for the emotional and psychological harm they’ve endured. These cases often focus on holding the individual accountable, but they can also involve organizations that may have failed to prevent the abuse.
Medina: How can organizations, like schools or sports associations, be held responsible in these cases?
D’Andrea: If it's found that an organization ignored warning signs, failed to conduct proper background checks, or didn’t adequately respond to complaints, they could be held liable for negligence. Victims and their families should consult with an attorney to explore these possibilities, as evidence of systemic failure can significantly impact a case.
Medina: What advice would you give to families who suspect misconduct?
D’Andrea: I’d strongly encourage families to report any suspicions to law enforcement immediately. They should also consult a legal professional to understand their rights and the steps they can take to protect their child. Open communication between parents and children is critical in identifying and addressing these situations early on.
