Arizona Teacher Arrested for Alleged Sexual Relationship with Student

Buckeye police have arrested a local teacher on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and sexual conduct with a minor, according to 12News. The former high school teacher and athletic coach at Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies High School, located at 1495 S Verrado Way, Buckeye, AZ 85326.  The 23-year-old teacher, Alyssa Todd, was arrested on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. The arrest stems from allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old student. The arrest comes after the teacher's husband reported finding handwritten letters from a teenage student hidden in the teacher's drawer.

Buckeye police received a call on March 16 from the husband of the teacher, who suspected that his wife was engaging in inappropriate contact with a teenage student.  According to court records, the husband discovered handwritten letters from the student concealed in Todd's drawer. Investigators, after scrutinizing the communications between the teacher and the student, have concluded that the alleged abuse took place both on and off campus for a minimum of two months.

Disturbing details emerged during an interview with a forensic interviewer, as the teenager disclosed that the teacher professed her love for him and even expressed intentions of leaving her husband. The child further revealed that the teacher would shower him with gifts and pick him up in her car for inappropriate encounters.

Todd now faces charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and sexual conduct with a minor. The Odyssey Family of Schools has terminated Todd from her position following her arrest.

Buckeye Police Public Information Officer Carissa Planalp emphasized the importance of vigilance among parents and guardians, stating, "Sexual predators come in all shapes and sizes. It is imperative for parents and guardians to know who their kids are communicating with, know who is in their child's life."

This disturbing case in Buckeye is not an isolated incident. Police revealed that this marks the third arrest of a "female sexual predator" tied to local schools in the past year. Shockingly, two of the arrests involved teachers at Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies High School.

Officer Planalp acknowledged the concerning pattern, stating, "Any time you have a series of arrests that seem awfully similar in nature, you tend to think maybe there's an issue, but on the flip side of that, is that you have individuals who are coming forward with that information. These crimes are not going unreported."

Todd is currently in custody with a bond set at $75,000. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

DM: Given your experience in these cases, can you explain what legal recourse is available for individuals who have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a teacher?

KB: Absolutely, Darla. Victims of sexual abuse by teachers have legal rights and options to seek justice. They can pursue civil lawsuits against the responsible parties, including the teacher, the school, and even the school district in some cases. These lawsuits aim to hold negligent parties accountable for their actions, seek compensation for the harm caused, and provide some form of closure and healing for the survivors.

DM: That's important information for our readers to know. Could you elaborate on the process of filing a civil lawsuit in such cases?

KB: Certainly. Filing a civil lawsuit begins with consulting an experienced sexual abuse attorney who can guide the victim through the legal process. The attorney will gather evidence, interview witnesses, and build a strong case to establish the liability of the teacher and any other negligent parties involved. It's crucial to remember that each case is unique, and having a skilled attorney by your side can make a significant difference in the outcome.

DM: Thank you for emphasizing the importance of legal representation. In situations like these, what factors contribute to holding the school or district accountable?

KB: Schools and districts can be held accountable if they failed in their duty to protect students from harm or if they were aware of any red flags or previous complaints about the abusive teacher. Negligence, lack of proper supervision, or insufficient background checks are some examples of circumstances that may contribute to the school or district's liability.

DM: That's valuable information for our audience. Finally, Mr. Biniazan, what message would you like to convey to victims of sexual abuse by teachers who may be reading this article?
