Tractor-Trailer Rollover Crash Leaves One Injured in Virginia

According to WJHL, a tractor-trailer rollover crash on Interstate 81 south near Abingdon, VA has resulted in significant traffic disruptions. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, December 17, 2023, prompting the closure of all southbound lanes as reported by Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) 511 Traffic Map.

The crash took place around mile marker 16.1, causing a substantial traffic backlog in the area. As of 5:45 p.m., the southbound lanes remain closed, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid congestion.

The Virginia State Police (VSP) confirmed that the crash involved two vehicles, a tractor-trailer, and a sedan. Authorities received reports of the collision in Washington County on Sunday. Fortunately, only one person sustained injuries in the accident.

According to the VSP, the driver of the sedan was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. Thankfully, the injuries were reported to be minor, providing some relief amid the unfortunate incident.

VDOT and VSP personnel are currently working diligently to clear the scene and reopen the affected lanes. However, due to the nature of the crash, it may take some time before normal traffic flow is restored. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, follow detour signs, and remain patient while traveling through the area.

Darla Medina: With accidents involving large commercial vehicles like tractor-trailers, victims often face significant challenges. Could you shed some light on what options are available to those injured in truck accidents when it comes to pursuing civil cases against the responsible parties?

Kevin Biniazan: Absolutely, Darla. In truck accident cases, victims have the right to seek compensation for their injuries and losses through civil litigation. It's crucial to understand that these cases can be complex due to the involvement of commercial trucking companies, insurance companies, and the intricate regulations surrounding the trucking industry.

Darla Medina: What steps should individuals take if they find themselves in such a situation?

Kevin Biniazan: First and foremost, it's important for victims to prioritize their health and safety. Seeking immediate medical attention is crucial, as it not only ensures their well-being but also establishes a record of their injuries. It's also advisable to gather as much evidence as possible from the accident scene, such as photographs, witness statements, and any available surveillance footage.

Darla Medina: Once victims have taken those initial steps, what would be the next course of action?

Kevin Biniazan: After seeking medical attention and collecting evidence, victims should consult with an experienced truck accident attorney. A skilled attorney can evaluate the details of the case, determine liability, and guide victims through the legal process. They will work to build a strong case on behalf of the injured party, gathering additional evidence, negotiating with insurance companies, and, if necessary, pursuing litigation to secure fair compensation.

Darla Medina: Are there specific factors that victims should consider when selecting a truck accident attorney?

Kevin Biniazan: Absolutely. It's crucial to choose an attorney with specialized experience in handling truck accident cases. These cases require a deep understanding of federal and state regulations governing the trucking industry, as well as the ability to navigate complex insurance policies and corporate entities. Additionally, victims should look for an attorney who has a track record of success in obtaining favorable outcomes for their clients.
