Kyle Blowers, a former massage therapist already facing multiple felony charges in Placer County, is now entangled in a separate legal battle in Yuba County. The allegations against him have escalated, with new charges involving the sexual abuse of a child, according to KCRA.
Blowers, who had been out of custody while awaiting trial for alleged sexual battery involving three of his clients at Massage Heights in Roseville in 2023, was arrested by Yuba County Sheriff's deputies roughly two weeks ago. This new development marks another chapter in a case that has garnered significant attention since it was first reported in July.
Court filings from Yuba County outline three counts against Blowers, including allegations of continuous sexual abuse of a child spanning from 2020 to 2024. The documents indicate that the most recent alleged incident occurred during the Christmas break.
Blowers appeared in court last week and entered a plea of not guilty. He also requested his release from custody, but the presiding judge denied the request, leaving Blowers detained without bail.
The situation in Placer County remains unresolved as well. Blowers faces 16 felony charges in that case, along with a civil lawsuit over the same allegations.
Blowers’ upcoming court appearance in Yuba County Superior Court is set for Wednesday morning, where further proceedings will determine the next steps in this unfolding legal saga.
The case continues to raise serious questions about the safety of clients and the systems in place to prevent such incidents. Authorities are continuing their investigations as Blowers remains behind bars.
Victims of sexual abuse often face overwhelming questions about their rights and the steps they can take to hold perpetrators and negligent parties accountable. In this interview, California sexual abuse attorney Jason Amala provides clear guidance on the legal avenues available to survivors of masseuse abuse, including how civil lawsuits can address the harm caused and ensure businesses are held responsible when their negligence contributes to abuse.
Darla Medina (Editor): Thank you for joining us. Many victims of sexual abuse may not know where to start when it comes to understanding their legal rights. Could you explain what options are available to those who were abused by a massage therapist?
Jason Amala (Attorney): Of course, Darla. Victims of sexual abuse, including those harmed by a massage therapist, have the right to seek justice in both criminal and civil courts. While the criminal process focuses on holding the perpetrator accountable through prosecution, the civil system allows victims to pursue compensation for the harm they've suffered. This can include damages for emotional trauma, medical bills, lost wages, and more.
Medina: In cases involving a business what role does the company play, and can they also be held accountable?
Amala: Yes, businesses can absolutely be held accountable if they were negligent in their hiring, training, or supervision practices. Employers like massage therapy clinics have a legal duty to ensure their clients' safety. If they failed to properly vet the therapist, ignored warning signs, or didn’t have adequate safety protocols in place, they could be found liable in a civil lawsuit.
Medina: What steps should victims take if they believe they’ve been abused in such a setting?
Amala: Victims should document everything they can remember about the incident, including the date, time, and any interactions with the therapist or staff. They should also report the incident to law enforcement and, if comfortable, notify the business where the abuse occurred. Seeking the guidance of an experienced attorney is crucial, as they can help navigate the legal process, protect the victim’s rights, and pursue accountability from both the abuser and any negligent parties.
Medina: For those who may feel hesitant to come forward, how can the legal process help protect their privacy?
Amala: That’s a common concern, and it’s completely understandable. In many cases, victims can file lawsuits under a pseudonym, such as “Jane Doe” or “John Doe,” to protect their identity. Additionally, courts often take steps to keep sensitive details out of the public record. An attorney can explain these options and provide reassurance throughout what can be a very challenging process.
