Chiropractor Terry Smith of Warrenville is facing numerous sex crimes charges for allegedly sexually assaulting several former patients at his office, All Sports Medicine in Willowbrook.
Smith was arrested in August of 2019 and has been charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, six counts of criminal sexual assault, and ten counts of criminal sexual abuse. All of the victims were female patients and one of them was a minor who was older than 13 but younger than 18 years old.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul released a statement following Smith’s arrest, which said that Smith “used his position and the patient/practitioner relationship to take advantage of people when they were at their most vulnerable.”
According to indictments against Smith, the alleged sexual assaults and abuse happened between April 26, 2017, and June 15, 2018. It is not clear how many victims there are in this case.
Anyone with related information or who believes they have been victimized by Smith has been asked to call the attorney general’s Investigations Division at (312) 814-2584.
Attorney contributor Guy D'Andrea is a sex abuse victims lawyer who represents victims in civil lawsuits. Brian has offered to share some general information regarding the legal rights of those who have been sexually assaulted by chiropractors and other medical professionals during treatment:
The relationship between a medical professional and their patients is built on trust. When receiving medical care, we all trust that these professionals will provide the treatment we need and treat us with respect. Most of these professionals do so, but the medical field has also faced serious problems with chiropractors, doctors, and other medical professionals sexually assaulting their patients.
Patients who have been sexually assaulted by chiropractors have legal rights. Those looking for justice often report the assault to law enforcement as a first step, but in many cases, these victims also have legal rights in civil courts. There are many situations where these victims may have grounds for a lawsuit against the person who assaulted them and the facility where the assault occurred.
If you or a loved one is a survivor of sexual assault by a chiropractor or another medical professional, you can learn more about your legal options by discussing your case with an experienced sexual assault victims lawyer.
