An 86-year-old pastor from Warren, Arkansas, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to child sexual abuse materials, according to MSN. Rocky Goodwin, the lead pastor at Calvary Baptist Church located at 605 Sturgis St, Warren, AR 71671, faces serious allegations after the prosecuting attorney's office in Bradley County filed charges in September 2024.
The investigation into Goodwin began in April 2023, initiated by special agents from the Arkansas State Police. According to documents released on Monday, authorities executed a search warrant at Goodwin's residence in May 2024, following several cyber tips from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. During the search, investigators seized numerous devices, including laptops and hard drives, and discovered a suspicious file labeled "12-year-old girl," containing sexually graphic material.
On June 20, 2024, investigators revealed they had found over 70 images depicting child sexual abuse materials on Goodwin's devices. Despite the evidence, Goodwin denied any knowledge of the material and claimed he did not operate the laptop in question unlawfully.
A judge has set Goodwin's bail at $150,000 and has required him to surrender his passport. His arraignment is scheduled for September 28, 2024, in Bradley County. Notably, part of his bond has already been paid, and reports indicate that Goodwin has continued to preach during church livestreams, raising concerns among community members about the implications of his ongoing role in the church.
In the aftermath of the arrest of Arkansas pastor Goodwin for child sexual abuse materials, many victims may feel uncertain about their legal options. To clarify these concerns, our team sat with experienced sex abuse lawyer Joshua Gillespie. They discuss the rights available to victims of sexual abuse by pastors, the process of holding negligent parties accountable, and the importance of support for those affected by such traumatic experiences.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us today. Can you explain the legal rights available to victims of sexual abuse by a pastor?
Attorney Joshua Gillespie: Certainly. Victims have the right to report the abuse to law enforcement and can also pursue civil lawsuits against the individual and, potentially, the church. This can include seeking compensation for emotional and psychological harm.
Medina: What is the likelihood of a predator engaging with children if they possess child sexual abuse material?
Gillespie: Research indicates that individuals who possess such material often have a higher risk of acting on those impulses. The existence of this material can be a strong indicator of a potential for harmful behavior.
Medina: What steps can victims take to hold negligent parties accountable?
Gillespie: Victims can file civil suits against the church if it failed to protect its members or ignored prior complaints about the pastor's behavior. It’s crucial to gather evidence and seek legal representation to navigate these complex cases.
Medina: What advice do you have for those who may feel hesitant to come forward?
Gillespie: I encourage victims to seek support from trusted individuals or organizations. Speaking with a legal professional can help them understand their options and empower them to take action. They deserve to have their voices heard.
Medina: Thank you. Your perspective is invaluable for those navigating these challenging circumstances.
