PA University Student Reported Sexual Assault by Uber Driver on Campus

An investigation is currently in progress at Villanova University, located at 862 E Lancaster Ave, Villanova, PA 19085, after a female student reported being raped by an Uber driver on campus. The incident, which took place in the Commons residence hall complex, was brought to the attention of university officials on Friday, September 20, 2024, according to ABC 7.

Details of the Alleged Sexual Assault

According to campus police, the assault allegedly occurred during the overnight hours of September 13th to 14th. The victim stated that after being dropped off by the driver, he entered the residence hall and assaulted her. Authorities have since identified the driver, who has been banned from the university as the investigation continues.

University and Uber Respond to Student Being Assaulted on Campus

Uber expressed their dismay about the incident. "Sexual assault is a devastating crime that has no place in our society. We are appalled by what's been described, and banned the driver as soon as this was reported to us. We will assist law enforcement however we can."

Students reacted with shock to the news. Senior Catherine Leary noted, "Villanova does a very good job of locking down the campus and making sure students are safe." Fellow student Mark Bonutti echoed her sentiments, stating, "It's awful that it happened. I'm surprised it happened here on Villanova."

Campus police are urging students to remain vigilant and report any concerning behavior.

Legal Rights for Victims Sexually Assaulted by an Uber Driver

In the aftermath of a reported assault at Villanova University involving an Uber driver and a student, understanding the legal rights available to victims becomes paramount. Experienced Pennsylvania sexual abuse lawyer Guy D'Andrea explores the options for those sexually assaulted by an Uber driver, the responsibilities of companies like Uber, and the immediate steps victims should take to protect themselves.

Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. What legal rights do victims have in cases of sexual assault by an Uber driver?

Attorney Guy D'Andrea: Victims have several rights, including the right to file a criminal complaint against the perpetrator and pursue a civil lawsuit for damages. They can seek compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, and any lost wages due to the incident.

Medina: How can victims hold Uber accountable in such cases?

D'Andrea: Victims may argue that Uber is negligent if they fail to conduct proper background checks on their drivers or if they ignore patterns of misconduct. This could lead to a case where Uber’s responsibility is questioned in enabling the assault.

Medina:  What about the university? Could they be held liable for cases like this?

D'Andrea: Yes, colleges can be held liable if they fail to provide a safe environment for their students. If the university did not take appropriate measures to ensure safety or ignored previous incidents, they might be considered negligent. This could lead to a case where the institution's responsibility is questioned in relation to the assault.

Medina: What steps should victims take immediately after an incident like this?

D'Andrea: It's vital for victims to seek medical attention and report the incident to law enforcement. Documenting everything—such as dates, times, and any communications—can also be helpful when pursuing legal action.

Medina: Thank you for your insights. This information is invaluable for those navigating such challenging circumstances.
