Authorities have apprehended a martial arts instructor in The Woodlands, Texas, following allegations of sexual abuse involving a juvenile student, according to Fox 26 Houston.
On Friday evening, 32-year-old Stephen Zarruk was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. The arrest stems from accusations that Zarruk sexually assaulted a juvenile during individual training sessions at The Woodlands Karate & MMA located at 30420 FM2978 #380, The Woodlands, TX 77354.
Zarruk has a background as a substitute teacher and contract physical education instructor with Conroe Independent School District, where he worked part-time starting in the fall of 2021. An arrest warrant was issued as part of an ongoing investigation into the allegations.
Currently, Zarruk is being held at the Montgomery County Jail with a bond set at $100,000.
In response to the allegations, Conroe ISD released a statement confirming that Zarruk's background check returned clear prior to his employment. The district emphasized that they are initiating the termination process after learning of the serious accusations. Officials noted that there are no indications of inappropriate behavior occurring on any Conroe ISD campus.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to the community, asking anyone with information or concerns about their children's interactions with Zarruk to contact them.
In the wake of recent allegations of child sexual abuse by a martial arts instructor, many victims and their families may be grappling with the emotional and legal implications of such trauma. To help navigate this complex situation, we spoke with Anjali Nigam, an experienced Texas sexual abuse attorney. She shares valuable information about the legal rights available to victims and the steps they can take to hold negligent parties accountable through civil lawsuits.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us, Anjali. Given the recent arrest of Stephen Zarruk, what legal rights do victims of sexual abuse have in Texas?
Attorney Anjali Nigam: Thank you for having me, Darla. Victims of sexual abuse in Texas have several legal avenues available to them. They can file criminal charges against the abuser, which is what we’re seeing in this case. Additionally, they have the right to pursue civil lawsuits against the abuser and potentially any negligent parties, such as organizations that failed to protect them.
Medina: What does it mean for a victim to hold negligent parties accountable?
Nigam: Holding negligent parties accountable means that victims can seek damages from those who may have contributed to or allowed the abuse to occur. This includes institutions that may have failed to conduct thorough background checks or did not act upon warnings of inappropriate behavior.
Medina: What steps should a victim take if they want to pursue a civil lawsuit?
Nigam: The first step is to consult with an attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can guide victims through the legal process, help gather evidence, and file the necessary paperwork. It’s also important for victims to document their experiences and any interactions with the alleged abuser.
Medina: Are there specific time limits for filing these lawsuits in Texas?
Nigam: Yes, Texas has a statute of limitations for filing civil suits in sexual abuse cases. Typically, victims have until the age of 28 to file a lawsuit, but there are exceptions based on the circumstances of the case. It’s advisable to act quickly, as gathering evidence and testimony can be time-sensitive.
Medina: Thank you, Anjali, for sharing this important information. It’s vital for victims to know their rights and the options available to them.
Nigam: Absolutely, Darla. Awareness and support are key in these situations.
