KSDK reported a tragic truck crash involving toxic substances has left five people dead and five others seriously injured, according to state and federal authorities. Effingham Fire Chief Brant Yochum confirmed that more than 500 residents who were evacuated can now return to their homes following the incident.
The devastating accident occurred on Saturday morning, September 30, 2023, when a truck carrying approximately 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia overturned on U.S. Highway 40, about a half-mile east of Teutopolis, Illinois. Preliminary investigations have determined that the victims tragically succumbed to exposure to the hazardous substance at the crash site.
In response to the crash, five individuals were airlifted to nearby hospitals due to their exposure to the leaked anhydrous ammonia. The immediate vicinity of the accident was evacuated within a one-mile radius, including northeastern parts of Teutopolis, as a result of the dangerous plume emitted by the leak.
Route 40, which had been temporarily closed following the crash, has since been reopened to the public. However, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated a thorough review of the incident to determine the exact cause and any preventable factors.
Illinois State Representative Adam Neimerg, who represents Teutopolis, expressed concern over the crash, citing a history of accidents on I-70 that redirect traffic through the town. Neimerg speculated that the tragedy could have been averted with better traffic management and preventative measures.
Efforts to address the aftermath of the crash and ensure the safety of the community have been underway. Multiple agencies, including state and local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency management teams, have collaborated to render aid and manage the incident. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) played a crucial role in road closures and subsequent reopening of U.S. Highway 40 between Effingham and Montrose.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency-Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) coordinated resources for the emergency response, while a contractor hired by the responsible tanker truck assessed the situation and advised on a safe plan to empty the tanker. A private hazmat company has been working diligently to patch the leak and remove the remaining anhydrous ammonia, replacing it with water.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted extensive air monitoring throughout the affected community and evacuation zone, assuring residents that no concerning levels of contamination were detected. As a result, law enforcement lifted the evacuation order from Pearl Street in Teutopolis, along U.S. Highway 40 to 2100 North Road, North to I-70, west to Pearl Street, allowing residents to return home.
The Illinois EPA will oversee the proper addressing of any contamination resulting from the incident. Meanwhile, the Illinois State Police (ISP) continues its investigation into the cause of the crash, utilizing traffic crash reconstruction techniques to unravel the sequence of events that led to this devastating accident.
As the community of Teutopolis mourns the loss of five lives and supports those injured, questions arise regarding the safety measures and traffic management along I-70. Efforts to prevent similar accidents in the future are expected to be a priority for both state and local authorities.
