A St. Petersburg doctor faces serious charges following allegations of coercing minors into sexual activity and abuse. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida announced the indictment of 59-year-old Stephen Andrew Leedy, who is a palliative care physician in the Tampa Bay area, according to Fox 13.
Empath Health expressed concern over the allegations against Dr. Stephen Leedy, who served as Chief Medical Officer at Tidewell Hospice for five years before leaving over a decade ago. Since then, there has been minimal interaction, and he has not been employed by Empath Health for more than ten years.
Leedy has been indicted on three counts related to the production of child sexual abuse material and two counts for coercing or enticing minors to engage in sexual acts. If found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life in federal prison.
Court documents indicate that Leedy, using the online alias "maximumuncle#9112," exploited approximately ten minors through various online platforms. He allegedly instructed victims during video chats to produce explicit images and even encouraged self-harm, telling them to cut, choke, and hang themselves.
In a shocking turn, one of Leedy's victims, a young girl, was discovered dead in November 2021. She had hanged herself in front of her phone, a method consistent with the chilling instructions Leedy had previously given her. This tragic case highlights the grave consequences of online exploitation.
The Pasco Sheriff’s Office and the FBI’s Tampa Office led the investigation, with support from local law enforcement agencies. Assistant United States Attorneys Abigail K. King and Ilyssa M. Spergel will handle the prosecution of this deeply troubling case.
In the wake of alarming allegations against medical professionals, victims of sexual abuse often find themselves navigating a complex legal landscape. To provide clarity and support, we spoke with experienced attorney Michael Haggard. He shares vital information on the rights available to those exploited or sexually abused by doctors and the steps they can take to hold negligent parties accountable through civil lawsuits.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. With the recent charges against Dr. Stephen Andrew Leedy, what legal rights do victims of sexual abuse or exploitation have, particularly in cases involving a medical professional?
Attorney Michael Haggard: Victims have several rights under both criminal and civil law. In criminal cases, they can report the abuse and participate in the prosecution of the offender. In civil lawsuits, victims can seek damages for the harm they’ve endured, which may include medical expenses, emotional distress, and loss of quality of life.
Medina: How can victims hold negligent parties accountable in civil lawsuits?
Haggard: To hold parties accountable, victims must demonstrate that the medical professional or facility failed to meet a reasonable standard of care. This could involve showing that the doctor acted outside the bounds of their professional responsibilities or that the medical facility did not implement proper safeguards to protect patients.
Medina: What steps should victims take if they want to pursue a civil case?
Haggard: The first step is to consult with a qualified attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They can help victims understand their rights, gather evidence, and navigate the legal process. It’s also important for victims to document their experiences and any communications related to the abuse.
Medina: Are there specific challenges victims might face when taking legal action against a doctor?
Haggard: Yes, one significant challenge is the stigma associated with sexual abuse, which can make victims hesitant to come forward. Additionally, medical professionals often have substantial resources and legal teams, making it crucial for victims to have strong legal representation to level the playing field.
Medina: What message do you want to convey to victims who might be afraid to speak up?
Haggard: I want them to know they are not alone. There are legal protections in place, and many resources available to help them. Speaking out can empower them not only to seek justice for themselves but also to prevent future abuse. It’s important to remember that accountability can lead to healing.
