TX Youth Basketball Coach Arrested on Child Sex Crimes

CBS News reported that a youth basketball coach from Southlake is facing serious allegations following his arrest on charges of inappropriate conduct with a child. Authorities confirmed the arrest of 28-year-old Mitchell Joseph Allan, of Aubrey, who has been charged with two counts of indecency with a child involving sexual contact. According to Pleasanton Weekly, Allan is the owner of NorCal Esports but "due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and the age of the victim, no other information will be released at this time."

Investigation Leads to Arrest of Coach Allan

The Southlake Police Department announced on Friday that Allan’s arrest followed reports of abuse linked to his work as a coach for a private basketball program. The allegations prompted an investigation that led to a warrant for his arrest, issued on January 29. On February 1, Allan was taken into custody by the Elm Ridge Police Department and subsequently booked into Denton County Jail.

Similar Arrest in Local Sports Community

This arrest comes just a day after Southlake police disclosed that a North Texas water polo coach had been arrested on unrelated child sexual assault charges. Although both incidents involve private sports programs, authorities have clarified that the cases are entirely separate.

Authorities Urge Parents to Speak Up

In a statement, Southlake police emphasized the sensitive nature of the allegations and the age of the victim, indicating that no additional details would be disclosed at this time. However, they are urging parents whose children may have had contact with Allan to come forward if they have concerns.

Holding Abusers and Negligent Organizations Accountable

When trust is broken by those in positions of authority, such as basketball coaches or educators, victims and their families are often left searching for answers and support. Attorney Anjali Nigam, an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse in Texas, shares key information about the legal steps victims can take to hold abusers and negligent organizations accountable. Her perspective offers clarity for those seeking a way forward after experiencing sexual abuse by a youth coach.

Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us to discuss the legal rights available to victims of sexual abuse, particularly in cases involving authority figures like youth sports coaches. What steps can victims or their families take after such incidents are reported?

Attorney Anjali Nigam: Thank you for having me, Darla. When a victim or their family comes forward, they have both criminal and civil options to consider. The criminal justice system focuses on punishing the offender, but civil lawsuits are often the best way for victims to seek compensation and accountability. They can file claims against not only the abuser but also any organization, such as a school or private club, that may have failed to protect them by neglecting proper safeguards.

Medina: You mentioned organizations potentially being held accountable. How does that work in these cases?

Nigam: Organizations that employ or supervise individuals like teachers’ assistants or coaches have a legal obligation to ensure the safety of the children in their care. If they fail to conduct proper background checks, ignore warning signs, or neglect to address complaints, they can be held liable for negligence. For example, if a private sports program knew about concerning behavior and failed to act, they could be named in a lawsuit alongside the individual perpetrator.

Medina: What challenges might victims face in bringing a civil lawsuit?

Nigam: One challenge is the emotional toll. Reliving traumatic experiences can be difficult, but many victims find strength in knowing their actions could protect others. Another challenge is proving negligence, which requires detailed evidence that the organization failed to meet its duty of care. Working with experienced attorneys who specialize in these cases can make the process more manageable and increase the likelihood of success.

Medina: For families who may be hesitant to come forward, what support systems are available?

Nigam: There are many resources, from counseling services to victim advocacy groups, that can guide families every step of the way. Additionally, legal consultations are often confidential and free, so families can explore their options without feeling pressured. The most important thing is to know that they are not alone and that there are avenues for justice and healing.
