Adrian Joseph Maher, 26, of Roanoke, has been arrested by Southlake police on charges that include sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child, and solicitation of a minor, according to Fox 4. Authorities took Maher into custody Wednesday night following an investigation into allegations stemming from his time as a water polo coach for a local private club.
Law enforcement officials revealed that the accusations involve abuse that occurred during Maher’s tenure with the club. Following the reports, the private organization terminated Maher’s employment. However, details such as the name of the club, the duration of his employment, and the timeline of the alleged incidents remain undisclosed.
Due to the victim’s age and the sensitive nature of the case, police are withholding further details. Officials have not clarified whether additional victims are suspected or the extent of their ongoing inquiry. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Maher’s conduct while he worked in his coaching role.
Maher is currently being held in Tarrant County jail, where no bond has been set. Southlake police are urging parents whose children may have interacted with Maher and suspect inappropriate behavior to contact Detective Roberson at 817-748-8235.
This case raises serious concerns within the community, and authorities are continuing to investigate to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.
Recent allegations against a former water polo coach have left many families searching for answers and support. To better understand the legal rights available to victims and how negligent organizations can be held accountable in light of child sexual abuse by a water polo coach, we spoke with Anjali Nigam, a Texas attorney experienced in handling sexual abuse cases. Her insights provide guidance for those seeking to navigate the legal system and address the harm caused by such incidents.
Darla Medina (Editor): Thank you for joining us. For families of victims abused by a water polo coach, what legal rights do victims of sexual abuse have in Texas?
Anjali Nigam (Attorney): Victims of sexual abuse have the right to seek justice not only through the criminal system but also through the civil courts. While criminal charges aim to punish the perpetrator, civil lawsuits allow victims to pursue compensation for the harm they’ve endured. This includes damages for physical and emotional pain, therapy costs, and other consequences of the abuse.
Darla: When it comes to situations involving a coach at a private club, are there ways to hold the organization itself accountable?
Anjali: Absolutely. In many cases, organizations that employ individuals in positions of trust and authority—such as coaches—can be held liable if they failed to take reasonable steps to protect children. This might include inadequate background checks, poor oversight, or ignoring warning signs of inappropriate behavior. If negligence is proven, the organization can be held responsible for its role in enabling the abuse.
Darla: What steps should parents or guardians take if they suspect their child may have been a victim?
Anjali: The first step is to ensure the child’s immediate safety and well-being. Seek professional support, such as counseling, to help the child process their experience. From a legal perspective, it’s important to report the suspected abuse to law enforcement and consult an experienced attorney. The attorney can guide them through their options, including filing a civil lawsuit to hold the perpetrator and any negligent parties accountable.
Darla: Are there time limits for victims to take legal action in these cases?
Anjali: Yes, Texas has a statute of limitations for both criminal and civil cases involving sexual abuse. In civil cases, the timeline for filing a lawsuit has been extended in recent years to provide more flexibility for victims, especially children. However, it’s critical to act promptly to preserve evidence and build a strong case. An attorney can provide specific guidance based on the details of the situation.
Darla: What would you say to victims or families who feel hesitant about coming forward?
Anjali: That hesitation is entirely understandable, as these situations are deeply personal and painful. But it’s important to know that they don’t have to face this alone. By coming forward, they not only take steps toward their own healing but also help protect others from similar harm. Support systems, legal advocates, and law enforcement are there to assist them every step of the way.
