Can a Bar Be Held Liable for a Shooting?

Attorney contributor Anjali Nigam is an experienced shooting victim lawyer representing victims and their families in lawsuits. Anjali recently shared his knowledge regarding when a bar can be held liable for a shooting.

"Bars often battle issues with violent crime. These issues frequently plague establishments where alcohol is served, from fights to shootings. Knowing this, bar owners have a heavy responsibility of ensuring their patrons and employees are safe from preventable crimes. In fact, bar owners are legally required to provide security measures to reduce the risk of violent occurrences. This may include hired security personnel, well-lit parking lots, and security monitoring cameras."

"Not all violence that occurs in bars is foreseeable, but many may have been prevented if the bar owner had sufficient security measures in place. If the bar had a history of violent occurrences, but no improvements were made to the property's security, the bar owner could be considered negligent. Victims of bar shootings may need the help of an experienced shooting victim lawyer to file a civil lawsuit that may lead to them recovering compensation."
