Dr. Randy Hassler Turns Himself in to Face Rape, Sexual Assault Charges

Dr. Randy Hassler of Salina, Kansas, has turned himself in to police to face charges of rape and sexual assault. Hassler is accused of raping one of his patients at Salina Regional Health Center.

According to the police, a female victim filed a police report over the summer, which led to an investigation starting in July. The woman told police that Hassler had sexually assaulted her February of this year.

Police eventually obtained an arrest warrant for Hassler. Salina Regional Health Center also conducted its own internal investigation of these allegations.

Hassler faces multiple sex crime charges, including sexual battery, rape, and sexual intercourse with a physically powerless victim. He turned himself in last Monday, December 23, and was released from the Saline County Jail that same afternoon.

Legal Options for Victims of Doctor Sexual Assault

Attorney contributor Reed Martens directly represents sexual assault victims in civil lawsuits. We've asked Reed to share some general information on the legal rights of patients who have been sexually assaulted by doctors:

Doctors are highly esteemed professionals who are trusted by their patients. Most doctors are worthy of this trust - but unfortunately, there have also been many cases of sexual predators practicing as doctors and other medical professionals. In fact, there have been reports of doctors sexually assaulting patients in all 50 states.

Sexual assaults committed by doctors not only traumatize the victims, they also damage the community's trust in medical professionals as a whole. These predators must be held criminally responsible for their heinous crimes. Additionally, their victims should be aware of their legal rights in both criminal and civil courts.

In many cases, victims of doctor sexual assaults may have grounds for a lawsuit against their doctor and possibly the facility where the assault occurred. Taking legal action this way can help provide financial compensation for damages related to the trauma caused by the sexual assault. Additionally, a lawsuit can demand accountability from predatory doctors and negligent third parties, such as hospitals that have failed to protect their patients.
