Michael Angel Garcia, a 37-year-old man from Prosper, TX was arrested Monday on charges of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old, according to WFAA. Prosper police confirmed that Garcia, who had been serving as a youth sports coach, said to be affiliated with Prosper Baseball Softball Association, was taken into custody by Hill County Sheriff’s Office deputies along Interstate 35 in Hillsboro. The arrest came after coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies.
Garcia is expected to face a first-degree felony charge of continuous sexual abuse of a young child or disabled individual. Authorities revealed that he is also under investigation for a separate family violence incident in Frisco, and additional charges may be brought forward as the case develops.
Garcia was formerly associated with the Prosper Baseball Softball Association as a youth coach. While police have not confirmed if his role with the organization is tied to the alleged assault, the association acted swiftly following his arrest. Officials stated that Garcia was immediately fired, and families of children he coached were notified.
Law enforcement and the sports association are working together to ensure the security and support of all youth participants and their families. Authorities emphasized their commitment to protecting the community as the investigation progresses.
Detectives tracked Garcia using license plate reader cameras before obtaining and executing a warrant for his arrest. He was booked into the Collin County Jail on Monday.
Victims of sexual abuse often face overwhelming challenges, especially when the accused holds a position of trust, such as a youth coach. To understand the legal pathways available to survivors and their families, attorney Anjali Nigam shares valuable perspectives on both criminal and civil actions. In this interview, she explains how victims sexually abused by a youth coach can hold perpetrators accountable and what steps families can take to protect their rights.
Darla Medina (Editor): What legal avenues are available to victims and their families in cases like this, where a coach is accused of sexual assault?
Anjali Nigam (Attorney): Victims of sexual assault by someone in a position of trust, such as a coach, have two primary legal options: pursuing criminal charges and filing a civil lawsuit. On the criminal side, law enforcement works to hold the perpetrator accountable, as we’re seeing in this case with the felony charges.
Medina: How does the civil process differ?
Nigam: A civil case allows the victim and their family to seek compensation for damages, such as emotional trauma, therapy expenses, or any other losses stemming from the abuse. It also holds institutions accountable if there’s evidence they failed to take action or properly vet the individual.
Medina: Could the Prosper Baseball Softball Association be held liable here?
Nigam: Potential liability would depend on whether they were aware of any prior misconduct or red flags and failed to act. If negligence is proven, the organization could be named in a civil lawsuit. It’s a point that attorneys representing victims often explore during the investigation process.
Medina: What would you say to families impacted by this kind of situation?
Nigam: I’d encourage them to report the abuse immediately, seek professional support for their child, and consult with legal counsel to understand their rights and options. These cases are incredibly difficult, but victims deserve justice and support as they heal.
