South Florida Anesthesiologist Faces Felony Charges for Child Pornography

A physician in South Florida has been charged with 11 felonies for allegedly uploading over 100 files containing child sexual abuse material, according to Local 10. Dr. David Rerko, 61, was arrested by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies following a traffic stop in Pompano Beach on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Dr. Rerko, a licensed anesthesiologist at Broward Health North, located at 201 E Sample Rd, Pompano Beach, FL 33064, since 2006, has also held a medical license in Mississippi. The investigation began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip in August regarding illicit material linked to his email account. Yahoo alerted the center to the concerning images and videos.

According to authorities, Rerko sent himself 122 files classified as child sexual abuse material, along with 117 files labeled as "child erotica." Each email reportedly bore his signature: “David Rerko, MD,” and the content depicted girls aged between 8 and 13.

Following his arrest, detectives seized Rerko’s iPhone and indicated that further forensic examinations of his other devices could lead to additional charges. During a court appearance on Friday, a judge set Rerko’s bond at $110,000. If released, he is prohibited from contacting minors, accessing the internet, and must surrender his passport.

Broward Health expressed shock at the allegations against Rerko, emphasizing their immediate action to revoke his privileges upon learning of the charges. A spokesperson stated, “We are fully cooperating with Broward Sheriff’s Office and thank our law enforcement partners for their relentless commitment to protecting our community.”

As of Friday, Dr. Rerko remains in the BSO Main Jail while the investigation continues.

Legal Rights for Child Victims of Doctor Abuse

In the aftermath of the recent arrest of a South Florida physician for child exploitation, understanding the legal avenues available to victims becomes imperative. South Florida attorney Jen Lipinski, an experienced advocate in sexual abuse cases, shares her knowledge on the rights of child victims and the steps families can take to hold negligent parties accountable. In this conversation, she offers guidance on navigating the legal landscape in such tragic circumstances.

Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. Given the recent arrest of Dr. Rerko, what legal rights do child victims have when it comes to cases of sexual exploitation by a physician?

Attorney Jen Lipinski: Child victims and their families have several important legal rights. They can seek justice through civil lawsuits against perpetrators, which can help cover medical expenses, therapy, and other damages. Additionally, they may also have the right to file complaints with medical boards or licensing authorities.

Medina: How can families hold negligent parties accountable in these situations?

Lipinski: Families can pursue claims against not just the individual, but also the institutions that failed to protect the child. This includes hospitals or clinics that may have overlooked warning signs or failed to conduct proper background checks. It’s vital to gather evidence and consult with legal professionals who specialize in these cases.

Medina: What steps should families take if they suspect abuse?

Lipinski: The first step is to report any suspicions to law enforcement and child protective services. It’s also important to seek medical help for the child and consider legal counsel immediately. Early intervention is key in both protecting the child and building a strong case.

Medina: Thank you for your valuable perspective on this sensitive issue.
