Three lawsuits filed on Monday, July 22, 2024, in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas allege that three western Pennsylvania non-profit juvenile detention facilities - Summit Academy, George Junior Republic, and Abraxas Youth & Family Services - failed to protect children in their care from "horrific and serial" sexual abuse.
The lawsuits represent 92 men and women who claim they suffered sexual abuse while confined as children at these facilities, which are located in Butler, Grove City, Erie, and Marienville. These facilities often house children from Allegheny County and surrounding counties.
The alleged abuse spans from the year 2000 to 2023, with claims that teachers, staff, assistant and head coaches, and even a facility doctor abused juveniles ranging in age from 10 to 17. Several juveniles reported being assaulted multiple times during their stay, sometimes on a weekly or even daily basis.
The lawsuits allege a disturbing pattern of abuse, including staff members entering showers while juveniles were bathing, pinning them to the ground, assaulting them in their sleep, and assaulting them in various rooms on campus. The allegations range from inappropriate strip searches to molestation and rape.
Victims were allegedly bribed or threatened to stay quiet, and abusers were reportedly protected from consequences, with some even facing retaliation for reporting the abuse.
The lawsuits seek compensation for the physical, mental, and emotional injuries the alleged victims suffered, as well as economic losses and punitive damages.
George Junior Republic and Abraxas have not responded, while Summit Academy provided a statement defending its practices and accreditation.
In the wake of disturbing lawsuits alleging widespread sexual abuse at local juvenile detention centers, we sat down with renowned attorney Guy D'Andrea to discuss the legal recourse available to the survivors. D'Andrea, who has extensive experience in cases of this nature, provided valuable guidance on the path forward for these victims to hold the negligent parties accountable and begin the healing process.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us today, Mr. D'Andrea. As an experienced attorney in cases of sexual abuse, what can you tell us about the legal options available for those sexually abused at a juvenile detention facility?
Attorney Guy D'Andrea: Well, Darla, victims have a clear path to seek justice through the civil court system. Civil lawsuits can be filed against the abusers as well as the facilities to hold the organizations and responsible individuals accountable.
DM: Can you expand on the specific legal recourse available to victims?
GD: Absolutely. Abuse victims can pursue compensation for the physical and emotional damages they suffered. This includes not only the abuse itself, but also the failure of the facilities to prevent it and the lasting trauma the survivors will have to endure. The lawsuits can also seek to enact policy changes and improved oversight to protect future youth in these centers.
DM: That's an important point. What advice would you give to other survivors of abuse in juvenile detention who may be considering coming forward?
GD: I would encourage them to speak with an attorney experienced in these types of cases. The legal system can be daunting, but there are professionals dedicated to ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected. It takes tremendous courage, but these survivors deserve justice and the chance to begin the healing process.
DM: Thank you, Mr. D'Andrea, for providing this valuable perspective. It's clear the path forward will not be easy, but these victims deserve to have their stories told and to see those responsible held accountable.
