Pasadena marriage and family therapist Edgar Gustavo Villamarin was arrested earlier this month for allegedly sexually assaulting two female patients and police suspect that there may be additional victims.
Authorities began investigating the 64-year-old therapist in November when a woman told police that Villamarin had sexually assaulted her. According to the police, their investigation uncovered corroborating evidence, and Villamarin was arrested.
Since Villamarin was first arrested, he has posted bail and been released. However, further investigations revealed another allegation of sexual assault dating back to January 2016. This second alleged victim also claimed that the assault occurred at Villamarin’s office on Orange Place during an appointment.
On January 9, Villamarin was arrested and charged with seven counts of false imprisonment, sexual assault, and sexual battery. He is currently free after posting $450,000 bail and has an arraignment scheduled for February 28.
Records show that Villamarin’s license was revoked in 1998, but this action was stayed. His license was also suspended for 90 days and he was placed on a five-year probationary period. The reasons for these disciplinary penalties are not available at this time.
Anyone with information related to this case or who believes they may be a victim has been asked to contact Detective Matt Crawford at (626) 744-3861 or Pasadena Police dispatch at (626) 744-4241.
Jason Amala, a generous contributor to Legal Herald and experienced legal practitioner, helps survivors of sexual assault fight for justice and recover the financial compensation they deserve in civil lawsuits. We’ve asked him to share some information on the legal options available to those who have been sexually assaulted by medical professionals; he had the following to offer.
“Most of us naturally trust our doctors as they are some of the most respected members of our communities. In fact, it’s hard to argue with the fact that the majority of doctors and healthcare professionals conduct themselves respectfully and provide the best medical care available. However, there have also been thousands of reports throughout the country of medical professionals sexually assaulting their patients. When this happens, it’s important to make sure the perpetrator is prosecuted and that the victims get the support they need. Part of this support includes giving the victims and their loved ones the option of seeking a deserved compensation via a civil lawsuit, such as one which takes into account damages such as therapy costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.”
