The Palatka community is grappling with shock and disbelief after Pastor Lee Parker of Emerge Church, located at 1015 Washington St, Palatka, FL 32177, turned himself in to authorities on April 16, 2025. The pastor, once seen as a guiding figure, now faces charges of sexual battery involving a child, according to Action News Jax. According to the Palatka Police Department, a warrant was issued following an investigation, leading to Parker’s surrender.
For those who once attended Emerge Church, the accusations have shattered their trust. Doris Clark, a nearby resident, expressed her outrage, calling the situation “pathetic and pitiful.”
Alvoid Maple Sr., a family friend, spoke about the congregation's unraveling after rumors began spreading. “He had a big congregation going there. My kids went there, my son, my daughter-in-law, their friends, and then when the rumors started, it was over,” Maple said. Reflecting on the allegations, he added, “And now God going to deal with it.”
Police have revealed that Parker’s position at the church gave him access to several individuals within the congregation, raising concerns about the possibility of additional victims. Investigators are continuing to look into whether other inappropriate relationships occurred under his leadership.
Jason Barnett, a former member of the church, expressed his disbelief. “Most people that are pastors, we look up to them. They are a man of God, and we try to put our trust in these pastors. But sometimes you have to be suspicious of things because they flesh just like everybody else,” Barnett said.
Authorities disclosed that Parker has faced misdemeanor charges in the past, though details of those violations remain unclear. The current investigation seeks to uncover the full scope of any misconduct tied to Parker.
After being held on a $100,000 bond, Parker was released from custody Thursday afternoon, according to jail records. For many in the Palatka community, the arrest has left feelings of betrayal and heartbreak as they process the actions of someone they once trusted so deeply.
When allegations of sexual abuse emerge against trusted community leaders, the legal path forward can feel overwhelming for victims and their families. Florida sexual abuse attorney Mike Haggard offers valuable guidance on the legal actions available to those who have experienced sexual abuse by a pastor, outlining both criminal and civil options while emphasizing the importance of accountability for both individuals and institutions.
Editor Darla Medina: When allegations like these come to light, what legal recourse is available for victims and their families?
Attorney Mike Haggard: Victims of sexual abuse by figures of authority, such as pastors, have several potential legal paths. They can pursue criminal charges, which are handled by law enforcement and the state attorney’s office, as we’re seeing in this case. Alongside that, victims may also file civil lawsuits to seek damages for the harm they’ve suffered, both emotional and financial. These lawsuits often also target the institutions that allowed the abuse to occur, such as the church, if negligence can be proven.
Medina: How does the victim’s relationship with the perpetrator impact the legal process, particularly when it involves a trusted community leader?
Haggard: It complicates matters because trust is a key factor that can delay victims from coming forward. People often don’t want to believe someone they respect is capable of such actions, and victims may fear backlash or disbelief. This is why many cases take years to surface. Legally, it’s important to note that Florida law provides extended statutes of limitations for abuse cases, which helps victims pursue justice even if significant time has passed.
Medina: What role does the church or its leadership play in cases like this?
Haggard: If the church leadership was aware of misconduct and failed to act, or if they negligently allowed the pastor to have unsupervised access to vulnerable individuals, they could be held liable in civil court. These cases often encourage institutions to adopt stricter safeguards to protect their communities.
Medina: What would you say to victims who may be hesitant to come forward?
Haggard: I would say that they are not alone, and there is support available. Reporting abuse is a difficult but important step. It not only helps them seek justice but also protects others who might be at risk. There are legal protections in place to shield victims and ensure their voices are heard.
