Tragic Drowning Incident at Discovery Cove: Man Dies After Found Unresponsive in Pool

Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a man in his 60s who was discovered unresponsive in a pool at Discovery Cove located at 6000 Discovery Cove Way, Orlando, FL 32821, near SeaWorld on Saturday morning, August 31, 2024. Authorities were alerted to the situation around 11:10 a.m. and promptly responded to the scene, according to Fox 35.

Despite the quick response from the park's staff, who provided initial care and contacted Orange County Fire & Rescue, the man was later pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. A spokesperson for Discovery Cove expressed condolences to the family, stating, "Our thoughts are with this family, and out of respect for their privacy, we won’t be commenting further."

Ongoing Investigation and Previous Drowning Incidents

This incident marks the third reported death at Discovery Cove since May. A 13-year-old girl was found unresponsive in May, followed by a 51-year-old man on July 8. The investigation into Saturday's event is still active, and authorities are working to gather more information.

As details emerge, the community watches closely as officials seek to understand the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.

Legal Guidance for Families Affected by Drowning Incidents

In the wake of recent tragedies at Discovery Cove, many families are left grappling with loss and uncertainty. To provide clarity on the legal avenues available to them and others dealing with a drowning related death, we spoke with Mike Haggard, an experienced attorney experienced in drowning accidents. In this interview, he outlines the options for families facing such devastating circumstances and offers advice on navigating the legal process.

Editor Darla Medina: Mike, what legal options do families have when facing a tragedy like this?

Attorney Mike Haggard: Families mourning the loss of a drowning victim can consider filing a lawsuit if negligence is involved. Theme parks have a duty to ensure the safety of their guests. If they fail in that duty, there may be grounds for compensation.

DM: When should families think about filing a lawsuit?

MH: Ideally, they should consult with an attorney soon after the incident. There are time limits for filing, known as statutes of limitations, which vary by state. Getting legal advice early can help preserve evidence and strengthen their case.

DM: What kind of compensation might families seek?

MH: Compensation can cover medical expenses, funeral costs, emotional suffering, and loss of companionship. Each case is unique, so the potential recovery depends on the specific circumstances.

DM: Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this sensitive topic.
