FL Coach Arrested on Molestation Charges at Acro Gravity Academy; Owner Speaks Out

According to WSVN, a coach at Acro Gravity Academy, Gustavo Adolfo Gil-Reyes, 38, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of molestation of a child between the ages of 12 and 16 years old, as well as battery. The allegations involve Gil-Reyes inappropriately touching his underage acrobat students, leading to a swift response from the academy's management.

Veronica Tirado, co-founder of Acro Gravity Academy, expressed her dismay and frustration upon learning of the accusations against Gil-Reyes. "As soon as we received the allegations of inappropriate touching, we took immediate action and let him go," Tirado stated. She explained that Gil-Reyes had been employed at the academy as a trampoline and tumbling instructor for approximately 8 months before the allegations came to light.

Tirado emphasized the academy's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for its students. "It's a bit frustrating to not see it coming, but we did everything within our power as soon as we received the allegation," she said. Tirado promptly reported the accusations to the police and cooperated fully with the authorities.

Despite reviewing surveillance footage and meeting with the alleged victims, Tirado mentioned that the academy did not find any evidence on the cameras to substantiate the claims. However, she acknowledged the potential speed at which such incidents could occur. "We checked the surveillance cameras, and we don't have any footage showing anything alleged. Nevertheless, it only takes a few seconds for a student to feel they were touched inappropriately," Tirado explained.

While the academy stands by its commitment to creating a positive and motivating environment, the police deemed the evidence sufficient to charge Gil-Reyes. "I would never allow a student to feel that way in our facility," Tirado affirmed. "We are a happy environment, a motivating environment."

Gil-Reyes has since been released on bond, pending further legal proceedings. As the investigation continues, concerned parents and community members await more information regarding the case.

Acro Gravity Academy has assured parents and students that they are actively reviewing their safety protocols and implementing additional measures to prevent any similar incidents from occurring in the future. The academy remains committed to providing a secure and nurturing environment for all its students.

Seeking Justice for Survivors of Gymnasium Abuse

In light of the recent arrest and allegations of sexual abuse at Acro Gravity Academy, we reached out to Michael Haggard, a prominent sexual abuse attorney based in Florida, to discuss the options available to survivors of abuse who wish to pursue civil cases against those who enable such misconduct in gymnasiums and similar establishments. We had an insightful conversation with Haggard, shedding light on the legal avenues for justice and the importance of holding accountable those responsible for safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable individuals.

Darla Medina (DM): Thank you for joining us today, Mr. Haggard. Given your expertise in sexual abuse cases, could you share some insight into what survivors of abuse in gymnasiums can do when seeking justice through civil litigation?

Michael Haggard (MH): Thank you for having me, Darla. Survivors of abuse in gymnasiums have several legal options to consider when pursuing justice. One of the most effective approaches is to file a civil lawsuit against the individuals or entities that enabled or failed to prevent the abuse. In cases like these, where a coach or instructor is accused of misconduct, the gymnasium itself may bear responsibility for negligence, inadequate supervision, or failing to implement proper safeguards to protect its students.

DM: How does the process typically unfold when survivors decide to pursue a civil case against those responsible for enabling abuse in gymnasiums?

MH: The process begins by consulting with a knowledgeable attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. They will guide survivors through the legal steps involved, which may include conducting a thorough investigation to gather evidence, identifying potential liable parties, and crafting a compelling legal strategy. It's essential to establish a strong case by demonstrating negligence or misconduct on the part of the gymnasium or its staff.

DM: What kind of compensation can survivors hope to receive through civil litigation?

MH: Compensation can vary depending on the circumstances and the extent of the abuse suffered. Survivors may be eligible to receive financial compensation for various damages, including medical expenses, therapy costs, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and, in some cases, punitive damages. The goal is to provide survivors with the necessary resources to begin the healing process and rebuild their lives.

DM: Are there any challenges survivors may face when pursuing civil cases against those who enable abuse in gymnasiums?

MH: Absolutely. These cases can be legally complex and emotionally challenging. Survivors may encounter resistance, denial, or attempts to cover up the abuse by the accused individuals or the institution itself. It is crucial for survivors to have a dedicated legal team that will advocate fiercely on their behalf and navigate the legal hurdles, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights protected.

DM: Lastly, what message do you have for survivors of abuse in gymnasiums who may be hesitant to come forward or pursue legal action?

MH: To all survivors, I want to convey that your experiences are valid, and you are not alone. By speaking out and seeking justice, you can not only hold accountable those who enabled the abuse but also create awareness, promote change, and protect others from similar harm. You have the right to heal, and pursuing legal action can be a significant step toward reclaiming your power and securing a better future.

DM: Thank you, Mr. Haggard, for sharing your insights and shedding light on this critical issue. We appreciate your dedication to supporting survivors and seeking justice in these cases.
