Massive Crash at North Bergen Target Leaves Several Injured

A terrifying incident unfolded on Friday afternoon when a dump truck crashed through the side of a Target store in North Bergen, New Jersey. The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. after the truck collided with a tractor-trailer, leading to significant destruction and multiple injuries, according to ABC 7.

Dump Truck Loses Control Before Plowing Into Target

According to preliminary investigations, the dump truck was loaded with rocks and dirt and was navigating a steep hill on 71st Street. Witnesses report that the driver appeared to lose control or brakes, causing the truck to veer into the southbound lanes of Tonnelle Avenue before crashing into the Target. David Donnarumma from North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue noted, "There was a lot of weight within the truck... coupled with the speed, he could have lost his brakes or control."

Five Injured in Tragic Crash

Emergency responders reported a total of five injuries, including a woman who had to be extricated from a bathroom inside the store. The driver of the dump truck sustained minor injuries and was also rescued from his vehicle. All victims were transported to a nearby hospital, although the extent of their injuries remains unclear.

Devastation Inside the Store

Surveillance footage captured the moment of impact, revealing the sheer force of the crash. NewsCopter 7 provided aerial views of tow trucks removing the dump truck from the sizable hole in the Target's wall. Inside the store, chaos reigned, with water from broken pipes gushing and debris strewn about, resembling a disaster zone.

Shoppers expressed their shock at the unexpected calamity. One witness, Abed Taha, recounted, "We were at the cat food aisle, and we heard a big bang... I asked my friend, 'is everything all good?' and he said, 'yeah, that's normal. Probably the truck loading up.'"

Ongoing Investigation After Dump Truck Accident

Authorities are currently holding the dump truck for further examination. Early indications suggest that this was an accident, but details are still emerging. The gaping hole in the side of the building has been covered with plywood, yet extensive repairs will be necessary to address the damage inside the store.

Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. With the recent dump truck incident at the Target store, many families may be wondering about their legal options. What should victims consider if they're injured in such accidents?

Attorney Stewart Ryan: Absolutely, Darla. The first step for victims is to seek medical attention and document their injuries thoroughly. Gathering evidence, like photos of the scene and witness statements, can also be beneficial.

Medina: What about families who have lost a loved one in an accident like this? When should they think about filing a wrongful death lawsuit?

Ryan: Families should consult with an attorney as soon as possible. In New Jersey, there are strict time limits for filing wrongful death claims, typically within two years of the incident. An attorney can help navigate the complexities of the law and ensure that families receive the compensation they deserve.

Medina: What types of damages can victims and families claim in these cases?

Ryan: Victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage. For wrongful death claims, families may pursue damages for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and other related costs.

Medina: Thank you, Stewart, for providing this important information. It’s vital for victims and their families to know their rights after such traumatic events.
