Emergency vehicles shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 at around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25th, 2019 after a semi-truck slammed into several other vehicles and then overturned.
Police are still investigating the accident but say that traffic in the southbound lanes was slowing to a stop. A 39-year-old man driving a 2014 Kenworth tractor-trailer failed to stop for an unknown reason and collided with the Nissan in front of him. The collision absolutely destroyed the Nissan and sent it careening across all of the southbound lanes before it finally came to a stop.
The tractor-trailer then crashed into a Honda and Toyota that had been stopped in front of the Nissan, pushed them off of the road. The semi-truck finally stopped after going through the guardrails and partially overturning in a northbound lane.
The crash claimed the life of the 61-year-old driver of the Nissan who was declared dead at the scene. Emergency responders pulled the 49-year-old driver of the Honda from her car and she was reported to have numerous serious injuries all over her body. Emergency responders also discovered that a child in the Honda was in cardiac arrest and had sustained other serious injuries. Both the woman and child were rushed to Christiana Hospital where they are listed as being in critical condition.
The 45-year-old driver of the Toyota and the driver of the semi-truck were also injured, although their injuries were not life-threatening.
An invesitgation is ongoing and the police are encouraging witnesses to call with any information.
