Middlesex County Doctor Faces New Charges in Expanding Sexual Assault Case

A Middlesex County physician previously accused of inappropriate conduct with patients now faces additional legal action following an investigation by state authorities, according to My Central Jersey.

Dr. Gurvindra Johal, 57, of Colonia, has been charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and single counts of falsifying or tampering with records and altering medical documentation linked to patient care. These charges were announced by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin.

The allegations against Johal date back to 2023, when he was initially accused of sexual misconduct at Amboy Urgent Care in Perth Amboy. The latest charges include incidents involving patients in Essex and Monmouth counties. According to the Attorney General’s Office, the investigation began after a patient reported being inappropriately touched by Johal during a visit to the Perth Amboy facility. Further inquiries led to the identification of additional victims at urgent care clinics in Newark and Freehold.

Authorities say Johal's alleged actions extended beyond physical misconduct. The investigation revealed he altered medical records to falsely state that a medical assistant was present during certain examinations. Additionally, he is accused of submitting misleading statements to an insurance carrier investigating claims of inappropriate behavior.

Division of Criminal Justice Director Theresa Hilton emphasized the severity of the allegations, stating, “This case highlights the importance of collaboration with local law enforcement to uncover individuals who abuse their professional authority. Violating the doctor-patient relationship for personal gratification, as alleged here, is reprehensible and will face the full weight of our prosecution.”

If convicted, the charges carry significant penalties. Second-degree offenses could result in prison sentences of up to 10 years and fines reaching $150,000. Fourth-degree charges may lead to up to 18 months of incarceration and fines of up to $10,000.

The case continues to unfold as authorities pursue justice for the victims and accountability for the accused.

Legal Paths for Victims of Doctor Sexual Misconduct

Victims of sexual abuse by a trusted professional, such as a doctor, often face confusion and uncertainty about their rights. To provide clarity, New Jersey doctor sexual abuse attorney Stewart Ryan discusses the legal remedies available, including criminal charges and civil lawsuits. This conversation aims to empower individuals to take informed steps against those who abuse their authority.

Darla Medina (Editor): Given the allegations against Dr. Gurvindra Johal, what legal steps can victims take if they believe they’ve been harmed?

Stewart Ryan (Attorney): Victims in cases like this can pursue both criminal and civil actions. On the criminal side, they should cooperate fully with law enforcement and provide detailed accounts of their experiences. This helps prosecutors build a stronger case against the accused.

Medina: And what about civil options?

Ryan: Through civil lawsuits, victims can seek compensation for emotional distress, medical expenses related to trauma, and other damages. These cases often focus on the breach of trust and the harm caused by the abuse of authority.

Medina: Are there challenges victims might face in these cases?

Ryan: Absolutely. Many victims struggle with coming forward due to fear, shame, or concerns about being disbelieved. However, legal protections like confidentiality laws and victim support services are in place to assist them. Additionally, New Jersey has extended the statute of limitations for civil claims in sexual abuse cases, giving victims more time to act.

Medina: What would you say to someone hesitant to come forward?

Ryan: I’d encourage them to consult with an attorney experienced in these matters. Even if they’re unsure about taking legal action, understanding their rights and options is a powerful first step. Support systems are available to guide them through this process.
