A 47-year-old man from Riverside County has been arrested following serious allegations of sexual assault involving juvenile females, according to KTLA. Authorities announced the arrest of Jose Alcides Vasquez on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, revealing that the incidents are linked to his former residence in San Bernardino County. Vasquez is known for his service as a pastor and volunteer within local churches across Inland Empire, including his most recent position as head pastor at Camino De Santidad Church in Menifee, CA.
The Ontario Police Department reported that investigators became aware of the accusations against Vasquez in August 2021. A school police resource officer alerted school officials after a high school student reported that her neighbor had assaulted her. As the investigation progressed, another victim stepped forward in July 2024, providing significant evidence that implicated Vasquez further.
Vasquez, who had been serving as the head pastor at Camino De Santidad Church in Menifee, was taken into custody on September 5 at his home without any complications. He has since been booked at the West Valley Detention Center on multiple felony charges.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information or potential victims of Vasquez to reach out to the Ontario Police Department at 909-986-6711, or to contact Detective J. Hernandez directly at 909-408-1292.
In the aftermath of the arrest of Pastor Jose Alcides Vasquez on multiple sexual assault charges, concerns about the rights of victims have surfaced. To address these issues, we spoke with experienced sexual abuse lawyer Jason Amala. He shares important information on the legal options available for those affected by pastor abuse, as well as how to hold negligent parties accountable in these difficult situations.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us, Jason. With the recent arrest of Pastor Jose Alcides Vasquez, many victims may be wondering about their legal options. What rights do victims of sexual abuse by individuals in positions of trust, like a pastor, have?
Attorney Jason Amala: Victims have several rights, including the ability to report the abuse to law enforcement and seek justice both criminally and civilly. They can file a lawsuit against the abuser as well as any institutions that may have been negligent in protecting them.
Medina: What steps should a victim take if they decide to pursue legal action?
Amala: The first step is to document everything—dates, locations, and any witnesses. It's also important to seek support from a therapist or counselor, which can aid in both healing and providing evidence in court. Consulting with a specialized attorney can help navigate the legal process effectively.
Medina: How can victims hold negligent parties accountable?
Amala: Institutions can be held liable if they failed to take appropriate action after being informed of the abuse. This includes inadequate background checks or ignoring warning signs. Victims can file civil suits that not only seek compensation but also aim to ensure that these organizations implement better safeguards to prevent future abuse.
