A disturbing incident has shaken the UCLA community, as campus police are investigating the reported sexual assault of a student by a food delivery driver in Westwood. The suspect, who fled the scene, remains at large, according to KTLA.
The assault reportedly occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2025, around 10:15 p.m. The driver, described as a Middle Eastern man in his 50s or 60s, allegedly attacked the student before leaving the area in a dark-colored sedan.
Authorities describe the suspect as having gray hair, a full beard, and a short stature. He was last seen wearing a dark zip-up sweatshirt and cream-colored pants. His car, a dark sedan, is the only vehicle information currently available.
Campus police are urging the public to assist in identifying the suspect. At this time, the driver’s name, the delivery service involved, and whether he has a prior criminal record remain unknown. Investigators are working to gather further details to advance the case.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact UCLA campus police immediately.
When incidents of sexual assault involve food delivery drivers, victims may feel uncertain about the steps they can take to seek accountability. Jason Amala, a California attorney with extensive experience handling sexual assault cases, outlines the legal options available to victims. In this conversation, he explains how individuals can navigate the legal system and explores the potential responsibility of delivery companies in such cases.
Editor Darla Medina: When someone experiences something as devastating as this, what legal options do they have to hold the perpetrator accountable?
Attorney Jason Amala: Victims have multiple paths they can take. On the criminal side, law enforcement will investigate and, if the suspect is caught, prosecutors can pursue charges. This can result in penalties like prison time or probation for the offender. On the civil side, victims can file lawsuits against the individual responsible and, in some cases, against the company they worked for, depending on the circumstances.
Medina: What factors determine whether a company could be held liable in such cases?
Amala: It often comes down to whether the company failed to vet the driver properly or ignored warning signs about their behavior. For example, if the driver had a history of complaints or a criminal record that wasn’t addressed, the company might share responsibility. That’s why it's so critical to ensure these services conduct thorough background checks.
Medina: For victims hesitant to come forward, what would you say to them?
Amala: I understand how difficult it can be, but coming forward can help prevent future incidents and hold those responsible accountable. There are resources available, from law enforcement to legal advocates, who can guide survivors through the process with care and confidentiality.
