WFAA reported that a series of devastating crashes unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries near U.S. 80 and County Road 309. The catastrophic chain of events began with a collision between an 18-wheeler and a Ford Edge SUV, leading to subsequent crashes along Interstate 20 at County Road 130 in Terrell, TX.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received the first distress call around 12:50 p.m., prompting troopers to rush to the scene of the initial crash. Based on preliminary investigations, it was revealed that an eastbound 18-wheeler on U.S. 80 was struck by a Ford Edge SUV attempting to make a left turn onto the road from the westbound lane. The impact of the collision was severe, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
The Ford Edge SUV had two occupants at the time of the accident, as confirmed by officials. Tragically, one of the occupants succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other occupant, who sustained serious injuries, was swiftly transported to Baylor University Medical Center for urgent medical treatment. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
In response to the first crash, DPS troopers were forced to divert traffic onto Interstate 20 to ensure the safety of motorists and facilitate the subsequent investigation. However, another calamitous incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m., exacerbating the already devastating situation.
Highway Patrol troopers were called to the scene on I-20 near County Road 130, west of Terrell, where a westbound semi-truck had come to a halt due to the earlier collision. Amid the heavy congestion, the stationary semi-truck collided with a pickup truck towing a trailer, leading to further chaos and destruction.
While both vehicles were immobilized, a second truck-tractor forcefully crashed into the rear of the first truck, compounding the tragedy. Regrettably, the driver of the second semi-truck was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities. No additional information has been provided regarding the identity of the deceased driver pending notification of next of kin.
Attorney contributor Anjali Nigam is an experienced Texas truck accident lawyer who proudly represents victims and their surviving family members. During a recent discussion, Anjali explained how trucking attorneys can protect the rights of the injured parties and their surviving family members after a fatal truck accident.
"Truck accidents can have devastating consequences, resulting in severe injuries or even the loss of precious lives. In our pursuit of justice, it is essential to address the legal responsibilities of truck drivers and trucking companies to ensure the safety of other drivers on the road. Equally important is recognizing the rights of those injured in truck accidents and their surviving family members to seek compensation for their injuries, losses, and emotional trauma.
Truck drivers are entrusted with the responsibility of operating large, powerful vehicles that can pose significant risks if not handled properly. They must adhere to strict regulations and standards set forth by federal and state authorities. These regulations include limitations on driving hours, mandatory rest periods, and proper maintenance of vehicles. By following these guidelines, truck drivers can mitigate potential dangers and prevent accidents caused by fatigue, distractions, or mechanical failures.
However, trucking companies also bear a crucial role in ensuring road safety. They must exercise reasonable care in selecting qualified drivers, adequately training them, and enforcing compliance with safety regulations. Negligent hiring or failure to properly train drivers can create an environment that increases the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, trucking companies have a duty to maintain and inspect their vehicles regularly, ensuring they are safe and roadworthy.
When a truck accident occurs, the rights of the injured parties or the surviving family members must be protected. These victims often face significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens. Seeking fair compensation for their losses is not only their right but also an essential step towards rebuilding their lives.
Compensation in truck accident cases can encompass various damages, including medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship. In cases of wrongful death, surviving family members may also pursue damages for funeral expenses and the loss of financial support or guidance from the deceased.
It is essential for truck accident victims and their families to consult with an experienced attorney who specializes in this area of law. These attorneys have the expertise and resources to navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding truck accidents. They can fight for their clients' rights, negotiate with insurance companies, and, if necessary, take the case to court to ensure fair and just compensation is obtained."
