Suspected Drunk Driver Arrested After Crashing Into School Bus, Injuring 4

Indiana State Police arrested a woman on Thursday morning for allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a school bus on I-70, injuring four – including two children.

Police say that shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, officers responded to a crash involving a school bus and car on I-70 near Emerson Avenue in Indianapolis. First responders found a silver car with serious damage in the left lane of I-70 and a school bus on the right shoulder of the highway.

Seven students and three adults were inside the school bus at the time of the crash. Two children and one adult were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, as was the driver of the car that struck the bus – 36-year-old Sarah Nuckols.

Nuckols would later be arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Financial Compensation Available to People Injured by Drunk Drivers in Indiana

Attorney contributor Jeff Gibson of Wagner Reese has extensive experience helping people recover the financial compensation they need after auto accidents, including crashes caused by drunk drivers. Here Jeff provided The Legal Herald with a bit of legal commentary on the legal rights and financial compensation options available to people injured by drunk drivers in Indiana:

At Wagner Reese, our attorneys have seen first-hand how devastating drunk driving crashes are for the victims. This is why it’s important that anyone who has been injured or has lost a loved one to a drunk driver is aware of their legal rights, including their right to financial compensation.

In Indiana and most other states, the drunk driver is not the only one who can face legal action from the victims and their families following a crash. Most states have dram shop laws, which allow the victims and their families to sue an alcohol vendor who served the driver before the crash – depending on certain circumstances.

Here is a look at the requirements for filing a dram shop lawsuit in Indiana. An alcohol vendor can be held liable for injuries caused by a customer if:

  • The vendor served alcohol to someone who was either:
    • intoxicated at the time and the person who served the alcohol was aware of this fact, and
    • this intoxication was a foreseeable cause of injuries suffered.

If you or a loved one has recently been hit by a drunk driver, you can learn more about your family’s legal options by discussing your case with an experienced drunk driving injury victims lawyer.
