Two individuals lost their lives in a devastating crash involving four vehicles on I-57 in Jefferson County on Thursday. According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the incident occurred around 10:03 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Ina, where first responders worked tirelessly at the crash site throughout much of the day, according to WSILTV.
The ISP reported that traffic was slowing due to road work in the area when a semi-truck with a trailer collided with the rear of a Hyundai Palisade. This collision set off a chain reaction, causing the Palisade to strike another semi-truck, which in turn hit a third semi-truck. Tragically, the driver of the Palisade was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger was transported to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
In the aftermath of the crash, the driver of the first semi-truck received a citation for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
Victims and families affected by semi-truck accidents often face overwhelming challenges in the aftermath of such incidents. In this interview, we speak with attorney Erv Nevitt, who specializes in representing those impacted by these tragic events. With a focus on legal rights and available options, Nevitt shares vital information to help victims and families understand the steps they can take to secure the support they need following a fatal semi-truck accident.
Darla Medina: What are the immediate steps families should take after a truck accident?
Erv Nevitt: The first priority should always be health and safety. Once everyone is safe, gathering evidence is vital—photographs of the scene, witness statements, and police reports can be crucial. Families should also seek medical attention, even if injuries aren’t immediately apparent.
Darla Medina: When should a family consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit?
Erv Nevitt: If a loved one has died due to someone else's negligence, it's important to consult an attorney as soon as possible. In Illinois, families typically have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim. However, the sooner they act, the better the chances of preserving evidence and building a strong case.
Darla Medina: What compensation can victims and their families expect?
Erv Nevitt: Compensation can cover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and, in wrongful death cases, funeral costs and loss of companionship. Each case is unique, so the amounts can vary significantly based on the circumstances.
