Two Injured and One Dead Following Bar Shooting

Eye Witness News 13 has reported that a shooting occurred just outside the Five Nine Bar and Lounge located at 11786 S Wilcrest Dr, Houston, TX 77099.

Investigators have reported that a young woman and her boyfriend were leaving the hookah lounge just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2022. As they stepped out of the door, her boyfriend was attacked by three or four men. The report stated that several people attempted to break up the fight but many people pulled out guns and began firing. The young mother was shot and died at the scene. Two other men were also shot but sustained minor injuries.

Police have determined that two suspects were seen leaving the crime scene in a white Dodge Charger. They are still investigating what prompted the attack.

Can a Bar Owner Be Held Liable for a Bar Shooting?

Attorney contributor Marc Lenahan is an experienced gunshot victim attorney in the state of Texas. Marc represents bar shooting victims and their families in civil court. Recently, he discussed when a bar owner can be held liable for a bar shooting death or injury

"Bar and hookah lounge owners have a responsibility to take the safety of their patrons and staff seriously. Many of these establishments have an increased risk of violence due to the consumption of alcohol. Bar owners have an obligation by law to make sure their properties are reasonably secure from threats of preventable violence, such as shootings. If bar patrons are injured or killed in a shooting on the bar property, an investigation should determine if the shooting could be considered preventable. Failure to offer adequate security could result in the bar owner being held accountable."

"Sadly, some bar shootings occur due to the negligence of the property owner. Foreseeability can play a significant role in determining whether a shooting happened due to negligence. For instance, if the bar had a history of violence yet the owner failed to improve its security, they could be found negligent in a civil lawsuit."

"Bar and hookah lounge shooting victims and their families should consult with an experienced gunshot victim attorney to explore their legal options in full. The attorney will seek to prove the bar owner was negligent, which can lead to the victim receiving the maximum compensation they deserve."
