A massage therapist for the Ocean Drive Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Hallandale Beach has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a client. According to the police, the assault happened at the center in April of 2018.
A woman told police she went to the center for a myofascial release massage and was sexually assaulted by 71-year-old massage therapist Lung B. Chang. She said that Chang touched her in her private area and that she responded by kicking him and yelling at him to leave the room.
Chang left the room and the victim got dressed and reported the assault to the manager of the center.
According to the police, the center called the victim the next day to ask her to meet with the owner, manager, and Chang. She agreed to the meeting and told police that she was told that the "practice" followed Chinese massage guidelines.
The victim contacted Hallandale Beach police in May of 2018 to report the sexual assault. However, Chang was not arrested until last Thursday, December 12. A detective contacted the woman on September 19 to notify her that Chang was working at the center again and was the subject of a second criminal investigation. At this point, she decided to press charges.
Chang has been charged with sexual battery without using great force.
Attorney contributor Michael Haggard represents sexual assault victims as a civil attorney. We've asked Michael to comment on the legal options available to those who have been sexually assaulted by massage therapists:
Sexual assault is a major and widespread problem in the massage therapy industry. At Abuse Guardian, our veteran sexual assault victims lawyers have represented numerous clients in sexual assault lawsuits against massage therapists and massage therapy businesses.
Massage therapy is a sensitive field and it's critical that massage therapists are trustworthy people. When sexual predators work in this field, there is a high risk of abuse for clients. After a massage therapist has been reported for sexually assaulting a client, we must investigate both the massage therapist and the business to determine if negligence was a factor in the assault.
For example, a massage therapy business owner could be considered negligent for failing to run a background check and hiring an employee with a history of sexual misconduct.
