A 41-year-old youth pastor has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a minor per a recent report by Fox 4 News. The Justice Department has confirmed that Luke Cunningham, who was the student minister at Lakeside Baptist Church located at 500 W Bluebonnet Dr, Granbury, TX 76048, was taken into custody on June 19, 2024.
According to online records, Cunningham is facing two counts of sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault. The charges are said to stem from alleged incidents that occurred at another church where Cunningham previously served as a student pastor.
Lakeside Baptist Church released a statement indicating that they learned of the accusations against Cunningham on June 2nd. The church immediately suspended Cunningham and conducted an internal investigation, which uncovered enough evidence to justify his termination. Lakeside Baptist then reported the findings to law enforcement.
Prior to his role at Lakeside Baptist, Cunningham served as a student pastor at Turning Point Church in Lubbock from 2010 to 2016. He is also said to have served at North Forth Worth Baptist Church in Fort Worth and Agape Baptist Church in Fort Worth, according to Baptist News. Turning Point Church has encouraged anyone with information or who may have been a victim to come forward and contact the authorities.
Details surrounding the alleged abuse have not been released, but Lakeside Baptist Church has stated that they are taking a closer look at their hiring practices and procedures to ensure the safety of their congregation. The church has also expressed a desire for national religious leaders to establish a more comprehensive database to identify and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
This case has sent shockwaves through the Granbury community, leaving many questioning how such alleged abuses could have gone undetected for so long. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the victim and ensuring that justice is served.
New allegations have emerged against Luke Cunningham, a former youth minister already facing charges of sexually abusing teenage girls. During a recent court hearing, prosecutors revealed that another potential victim has come forward, raising concerns about Cunningham's ongoing threat to the community. The new claims, which predate the existing charges and originate from Tarrant County while he was a youth pastor at Turning Point Community Church, add to a disturbing pattern of reported sexual misconduct, further complicating Cunningham's legal battle.
In the wake of the arrest of a Granbury youth pastor accused of sexually assaulting a minor, the legal recourse available to victims of clergy abuse has come into sharp focus. For this reason, we sat down with Anjali Nigam, an experienced Texas attorney with experience representing survivors of sexual abuse by members of the clergy, to discuss the rights of victims and strategies for ensuring accountability from negligent institutions.
Editor Darla Medina (DM): Thank you for taking time to discuss the legal rights available for victims of sexual abuse.
Attorney Anjali Nigam (AN): Thank you for having me, Darla. Cases like this are heartbreaking, but unfortunately all too common. Victims of sexual abuse by clergy, including youth pastors, have legal options available to them.
First and foremost, the abuser can be criminally charged and prosecuted. The victim may also be able to file a civil lawsuit against the abuser as well as the church or organization that employed them. This allows the victim to seek compensation for the harm they've suffered.
Churches and other institutions have a moral and legal duty to protect the children in their care. If they failed to properly vet, monitor, or remove a predator, they can be held liable for negligence. This includes not having adequate safeguards in place or ignoring warning signs.
DM: What advice would you give to anyone who may have been a victim or has information about incidents involving this youth pastor?
AN: I would urge them to come forward and speak with law enforcement and an experienced clergy abuse attorney. The trauma of sexual abuse can be overwhelming, but there are resources and support available. An attorney can help navigate the legal system, ensure their rights are protected, and pursue all avenues of accountability and justice.
Time is often of the essence in these cases, so I encourage anyone with information to act quickly. Churches and institutions have been known to try and cover up or downplay these types of incidents, so it's crucial that victims have strong legal representation.
DM: Thank you, Anjali, for sharing your expertise on this difficult but important topic. Victims deserve justice and accountability, and I hope this interview provides some guidance for those impacted by this disturbing case.
For victims and their families grappling with the trauma of clergy sexual abuse, it's crucial to know that you are not alone. An experienced attorney can be an invaluable ally in navigating the complex legal system and pursuing the accountability and justice you deserve.
