A former gymnastics coach appeared in Cabell County court on Tuesday morning, October 15, 2024, facing serious allegations of sexual abuse, according to WOWK TV. Lance Spencer, who was arrested and indicted in May, is charged with eight counts of sexual abuse by a custodian and eight counts of sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust to a child while a gymnastics coach at Bozhi's Gym Nest located at 3720 Green Valley Rd, Huntington, WV 25701.
During the court session, both the prosecution and defense requested additional time to review evidence obtained from Spencer's home. This request has resulted in a scheduled court date for December 17, allowing both sides to prepare adequately for the upcoming proceedings.
Spencer, a former coach at Bozhi’s Gym Nest in Huntington, is accused of targeting primarily minor females who attended the gym from 2003 to 2023. The FBI noted that Spencer allegedly exploited his position to gain access to these young athletes. Reports indicate that he engaged in sexual acts with minors and inappropriately touched them under the pretense of coaching and physical therapy.
In response to the allegations, Bozhi’s Gym Nest severed ties with Spencer when the accusations emerged, stating that they are now “unaffiliated” with him. Following the serious nature of the allegations, Spencer has been prohibited from coaching through USA Gymnastics or engaging in any role within Olympic and Paralympic sports.
The situation continues to develop as the legal process unfolds, with significant implications for the local gymnastics community and the safety of its young athletes.
In the wake of serious allegations against former gymnastics coach Lance Spencer, many victims and their families are left seeking clarity on their legal rights. To provide valuable guidance, we spoke with Jesse Forbes, a seasoned child sexual abuse attorney in West Virginia. In this conversation, Forbes discusses the legal options available to victims sexually abused by a gymnastics coach, the importance of holding negligent parties accountable, and the steps families can take to ensure justice for their children.
Editor Darla Medina: Thank you for joining us. Can you explain the legal rights available to children who have been sexually abused by coaches?
Attorney Jesse Forbes: Absolutely, Darla. Children have the right to report abuse and seek justice. They can file civil lawsuits against the abuser and potentially against the organizations that failed to protect them. This includes gyms and sports organizations that may have had knowledge of the abuse.
Medina: What steps can parents or guardians take to hold negligent parties accountable?
Forbes: Guardians should document everything and report the abuse to law enforcement immediately. Consulting with an attorney experienced in child sexual abuse cases is crucial. They can help navigate both criminal and civil legal avenues to ensure that the child’s rights are protected.
Medina: How can we encourage more victims to come forward?
Forbes: Creating a safe and supportive environment is key. Victims need to know they will be believed and supported. Public awareness campaigns can also help break the stigma around reporting abuse, making it easier for victims to speak out.
