A Farmington woman employed at a local behavioral treatment center has been accused of engaging in inappropriate sexual behavior with a child under her care, according to 5 News Online.
Stormy Ellison, a 25-year-old Behavioral Health Associate at the Piney Ridge Treatment Center located at 2805 E Zion Rd, Fayetteville, AR 72703, was arrested on Aug. 15, 2024, and charged with one count of sexual indecency with a child.
According to a preliminary report, on Aug. 14, a DHS hotline report was forwarded to the Fayetteville Police Department by an investigator with the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division. The report alleged that Ellison had shown a juvenile male resident nude images and videos of herself, and had also propositioned the juvenile to engage in sexual activity.
The report states that the juvenile claimed the behavior began on Aug. 6 and continued through Aug. 8, during which time Ellison had provided the juvenile with food and allowed him to speak to someone via FaceTime, which is against the center's policy.
In an interview, Ellison initially denied the allegations but later corroborated the majority of the juvenile's statement, including using an app to communicate about future sex acts. Ellison admitted to speaking to the juvenile about meeting for sex after he was released from the facility, though she claimed she wasn't planning on actually doing so.
Piney Ridge Treatment Center is described on its website as a "102-bed psychiatric residential facility that has been specifically designed for girls and boys between the ages of 7 and 17 who are suffering from sexual behavior disorders."
Ellison, a mandated reporter, was in a position of trust and authority over the juvenile, according to the report. She was released on a $10,000 bond and has a court hearing scheduled for Sept. 9 in Washington County.
In light of the disturbing allegations surrounding a Behavioral Health Associate at the Piney Ridge Treatment Center, we sat down with experienced child sexual abuse lawyer Joshua Gillespie to discuss the legal options and rights available for patients sexually abused by a behavioral health associate. Gillespie provided valuable insights into the potential civil lawsuits, damages, and steps the victims can take to ensure justice is served.
Editor Darla Medina: What are the key legal considerations for the victims who were sexually abused while seeking treatment at a behavioral treatment center?
Attorney Joshua Gillespie: This is a deeply troubling situation. As mandated reporters, these associates have a legal and ethical duty to protect the children in their care, not engage in sexual abuse. These victims have a right to seek justice and hold both the individual perpetrator and the treatment center accountable.
Medina: What are some of the legal avenues victims and their families can pursue?
Gillespie: These victims can file a civil lawsuit against the associate for the sexual abuse, as well as a lawsuit against the treatment center for negligence in failing to properly supervise and protect the children in their care. The treatment center may be liable for not having adequate safeguards and training in place to prevent such abuse from occurring.
Medina: What kind of damages could victims seek in a civil lawsuit?
Gillespie: Victims could seek compensation for the emotional trauma, psychological harm, and any other damages they have suffered as a result of the abuse. This can include damages for pain and suffering, therapy and counseling costs, and punitive damages to punish the perpetrator and the negligent treatment center.
Medina: Are there any other steps the victims and their families should consider?
Gillespie: I would strongly advise the victims and their families to seek the guidance of an experienced child sexual abuse lawyer who can help navigate the complex legal system and ensure their rights are protected. Time is of the essence in these cases, so they should act quickly to preserve evidence and build a strong case.
Medina: Thank you for providing this valuable insight. It's clear that the victims in this case have a path forward to seek justice and hold the responsible parties accountable.
Gillespie: You're welcome. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. I hope they are able to find the support and justice they deserve.
