2 Hospitalized, 1 Charged After Stabbing at Franklin Street Tavern

An altercation outside of the Franklin Street Tavern in the early hours of June 4 left two people hospitalized and two charged.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing at the Franklin Street Tavern at around 2:40 a.m. last Thursday. According to the police, surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts revealed that 33-year-old Zachary Miller pulled out a knife during a confrontation with a group of people outside of the bar.

21-year-old Jacob Rice reportedly tackled Miller from behind and was stabbed. A group of four to five men then started punching and kicking Miller. He eventually escaped.

Miller allegedly chased after the group, caught one, and held a knife to his throat. That man was no longer at the scene when the police arrived.

Rice and Miller were both hospitalized. Miller faces a preliminary charge of battery with a deadly weapon and Rice has been charged with battery and disorderly conduct.

Attorney Commentary On Stabbings at Bars By Jeff Gibson

Attorney contributor Jeff Gibson is an experienced crime victim lawyer who represents victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Jeff has offered to share some information on the legal rights of bar stabbing victims:

Bar owners are legally obligated to make sure their properties are safe from preventable dangers that could harm their customers and employees, including foreseeable violent crime. When people are injured or killed in a bar stabbing, it’s important to determine if the bar had adequate security or if the stabbing was enabled by negligence.

Some bar stabbings only happen due to negligence by the property owner, such as failing to improve security after past issues with violent crime. In cases involving negligence, violent crime victims may have grounds for a lawsuit.

If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a bar stabbing, you can learn more about your legal rights in a free consultation with one of our experienced crime victim lawyers.
